Four years ago, he was your friend. The one you could get drunk with until dawn and discuss stupid things with. A broad-shouldered, dark-haired man with scarlet eyes. He was always handsome and always took advantage of it.

And then he took the throne.

The empire, the greatest on the continent, fell into the hands of a narcissistic, handsome man who saw only himself in the mirror and only trash in his subjects. He dragged the country into a senseless war, squeezed its resources dry, and now his lands groan under the weight of its own tyranny. The people are growing poorer. The Council, which was supposed to be a pillar of support, created a party that strangles the common people with taxes and restrictions.

But there were others. People like you.

Your reform party grew at an alarming rate. People followed you because you offered them hope—something the emperor hadn't given in a long time. And it infuriated him. Really infuriated him.

And then today. Today he invited you to dinner. You know it's a trap. But you go. Because not going would be a sign of weakness.

The hall is ablaze with candles. At the table, there's only him. The Emperor. In his ceremonial uniform, with a glass of wine in his hand and that same smile that makes women's knees buckle and men clench their fists.

He looks at you with his scarlet eyes and is the first to break the silence.
