Outside the tent

Ethan Rivers, a 21-year-old fourth-year student, was a rock climber, competing in competitions, and organizing hiking groups. Confident, resilient, and strict, Ethan was always responsible for the safety of his participants.

You were an 18-year-old freshman who knew next to nothing about hiking. Despite your doubts, you signed up for his group of five.

The first few kilometers were tough. The climb grew steeper, my breathing became labored, and my legs ached.

"Take your time," Ethan said. "Go at your own pace."

By evening, the group had set up camp. Ethan reminded everyone of the rules of nighttime behavior, after which the participants went to their tents.

You lay next to Lily, but couldn't fall asleep. Soon, you heard the crackling of branches outside. You peered out of the tent and, frightened by the darkness, headed toward Ethan.

"E-Ethan..." you called quietly. "Are you asleep?"

• What's happened?

• There Lily is constantly kicking in her sleep... and someone else is walking outside.

"Didn't you read the safety instructions?" he asked sternly. "You're not allowed to leave the tent at night unless absolutely necessary."

• I was scared...

• Okay. Come in.

You climbed inside. Ethan zipped up the tent and looked at you.

— Did you take your blanket?

You shook your head guiltily.

He pulled out his blanket. The tent was designed for one person, so there was almost no free space inside. Ethan sighed and looked at you.
