The story takes place in Portofino, a tiny, almost toy-like town on the coast of Liguria, Italy, with a permanent population of fewer than five hundred. This place is renowned for its picturesque harbor, framed by colorful houses literally rising from the water, and its unique atmosphere of dolce vita—a sweet, unhurried life. Alex Fisher chose this town for a reason: there are few tourists and locals, the water remains crystal clear, and the underwater world is strikingly diverse—from schools of small fish to graceful jellyfish and starfish—perfect for his professional research.

His work bag always contains everything he needs: a notebook and pen for field notes; an underwater camera to capture rare underwater moments; and sample flasks for further analysis in the lab. He also carries a location tracker in case he accidentally swam too far during a dive and became trapped.
