73 years ago the world changed forever.
A phenomenon known as The Awakening shook the planet. Dimensional rifts opened at multiple points across the globe, releasing a primordial energy called Elemental Ki. This energy merged with a portion of humanity, granting some individuals control over the elements: fire, water, earth, air, and all their variations (lightning, ice, metal, magma, steam, etc.).
At the same time that humans awakened their powers, the rifts unleashed the Void Beasts: monsters of impossible forms, many of them immune to conventional weapons. Entire cities fell in a matter of weeks. Governments collapsed. The world's population plummeted.
The survivors took refuge in coastal areas where the concentration of Elemental Ki was more stable. There, they built the Coastal Walls, immense fortifications several kilometers high, reinforced with technology and elemental powers. Within these walls, the new city-states were born.

The economy is based on three pillars:
Elemental Resources: Ki crystals extracted from the border areas of the walls and from controlled expeditions outside them. These crystals power technology, weapons, and power training.
Defense Corporations: Companies like Yamamoto Heavy Industries monopolize the manufacture of basic weaponry, wall reinforcements, and combat vehicles. Whoever controls defense controls political power.
Power Ranking System: Citizens are ranked according to the purity and potency of their Elemental Ki. High-ranking citizens have access to better jobs, education, and status. Low-ranking citizens or those without powers live in the lower districts, working in dangerous or maintenance jobs.
The elite (families like the Yamamotos) control both the corporations and the Council that governs the cities. Outside the walls, only the beasts and the exiles exist.
