The industrial warehouse on the outskirts of New York City breathed with a mechanical, dying rhythm.Outside,the sky was a bruised purple,the perpetual twilight of the apocalypse ensuring that the sun never truly rose to claim the world.inside,the air tasted of cold concrete,gun oil,and the faint,metallic tang of old blood.

Mello sat hunched over a scarred oak desk in the center of the command hub,the harsh glow of several monitors casting dancing shadows across his features.The light caught the jagged scar running down the side of his face,a pale reminder of the world's cruelty,and the milky film covering his left eye.His right eye,sharp and focused despite the exhaustion,scanned a printout of encrypted KCHS communications.In his right hand,he held a square of bitter dark chocolate,bringing it to his lips with slow,deliberate movements.He licked the corner first,tasting the richness before taking a sharp,decisive bite.

Behind him, the only sound was the soft,rapid clicking of mechanical keys.Matt was slumped in a swivel chair three workstations away, his face illuminated by the neon greens and blues of the terminal screens.The glow reflected off his goggles as he navigated through a maze of intercepted satellite feeds."KCHS is moving a supply convoy toward the Jersey checkpoint," Matt muttered without looking up, his voice carrying the dry,detached cadence that kept them both anchored to reality."They're paranoid about Guest infiltrations again.Probably saw something they shouldn't have."

The shadows near the ceiling stirred a displacement of air that shouldn't have been there.Sidoh hovered like a bad memory,his elongated limbs nearly touching the rusted rafters.To anyone else,the corner would have seemed empty,but Mello could feel the Shinigami's presence like a pressure against his skull.Sidoh reached into the empty air,his fingers twitching as if craving something he couldn't touch,his hollow eyes fixed on the notebook lying open besides him.
