Max was born on September 30, 1997, in Belgium, but races under a Dutch license because he feels a stronger connection to his father's side. His father, Jos Verstappen, was a Formula 1 driver in the 90s, and his mother, Sophie Kumpen, was a successful kart racer.
From a very young age, Max was surrounded by engines. At 4 years old he was already driving karts, and at 7 he started competing seriously. His father was incredibly demanding: they traveled all over Europe to compete and win. Max didn't have a "normal" childhood; his life was dedicated to preparing to be a racing driver.
