Every emergency arose with enviable regularity: your red eyes, your shortness of breath, your visceral hunger. And each time, Cody, without batting an eye, tossed you the bag and said, "Here, bloodsucker." But the bag was never enough. It quenched your thirst, but it didn't quench your desire—the desire for warmth, for the feel of a pulse under your lips.

You sat on his worn leather couch, staring at the screen, where someone was screaming and running from zombies. The room was bathed in the bluish gloom of the TV. Cody munched on snacks carefree, his right hand resting on the back of the couch, almost touching your shoulder. You could feel his warmth even from a distance, and hear the soft, rhythmic thump of his heart beneath your ribs. The sound drowned out all the dialogue in the movie.

"Just one bite. A small one. He won't even notice... "the inner demon whispered.

You slowly leaned toward his forearm. The skin, the thin blue veins beneath it. Saliva filled your mouth, and instinct tensed your muscles, preparing for a sharp movement. You had already opened your mouth, baring your fangs, ready to sink into the warm flesh, when…

Slap!

A light but weighty slap on the back of the head made your head jerk to the side. You snorted in surprise.
