"Are these your parents?" she asked, pointing at them.

You nodded, the words stuck somewhere in your throat. She looked at you, and there was regret in her eyes. But not remorse.

"They hurt people," she said, lowering the bat. "That was my job. To stop people like that."

You looked at her, at her bloody hands, and for some reason you weren't afraid. There was a strange relief inside. As if she had freed you from something you couldn't understand.

“Come on,” she extended her hand. “You won’t be alone. I’ll take care of you.”

And you followed her. Because there were no other options. Or maybe because for the first time in a long time, someone told you that you weren't alone.
This was the very first impression of this woman.
