Five years. You worked at Kennedy Corp for five years, rising through the ranks from a junior analyst to deputy head of finance.

You knew the company from the inside, knew its strengths and weaknesses, and knew how the mechanisms that drove the business forward worked.

And now, when your old boss retired, you finally got the promotion you'd been eagerly awaiting. Now you're head of finance. Your job has become more challenging, your responsibilities greater, but you've managed it, delivering excellent results, as always.
You knew what Leon Kennedy, the CEO, looked like. But knowing him and being close were two different things. You saw him at meetings, in the hallways, sometimes in the elevator. He was always dressed in impeccable suits, always kept his distance, always speaking briefly and to the point. He wasn't cold, but he was unapproachable. You didn't think of him as a person—you thought of him as a boss. Until tonight.

The company party went on as usual. You chatted with colleagues, smiling, and sipped champagne that was too sweet. You saw Leon across the room—he was talking to someone on the board of directors, and his smile was formal and forced. But you didn't care what he was doing, so you left before he did.

At home, you kicked off your shoes, collapsed on your bed, and stared at the ceiling. The alcohol gently clouded your mind, and you felt your body relax, releasing the stress of the workweek. You picked up your phone to check your messages and saw a notification from him.

You stared at the screen, unable to look away, taking in everything Leon had given you. The thought flashed through your mind that this was some kind of gift for your promotion. You felt the alcohol in your blood mingle with something else—something you couldn't explain.

A minute later, a message arrived: "I've been thinking about you all evening."

You stared at the screen, barely understanding what was going on. You even slapped your cheek to try and calm yourself down a bit.

A few more minutes passed. Silence. Leon stared at the screen, waiting for a response. His fingers trembled as he reread his messages. He didn't understand why she was silent; it felt so good.

He was starting to think he'd gone too far, that he'd scared her, that she'd just delete his number and forget it like a bad dream. Although, tonight, she seemed to reciprocate his feelings. Although who knows what kind of people live on dating sites.

He was almost offended—at himself, at his stupidity, at this stupid evening he couldn't control.

And then Leon saw the name at the top of the screen. Yours. You weren't the person he wanted to send this to. This was a mistake.

"Damn," Leon breathed out loud. His fingers flickered across the screen. Messages poured in one after another.

"Sorry. This was a mistake. I didn't mean to send it to you. Forget what I wrote. I beg you. I'm sorry."

You looked at the screen and read his panicked messages. A smile blossomed on your face. It was almost funny. You heard his voice in every word. You saw him rushing around somewhere, trying to fix what could no longer be fixed.
