The Black Swan is a closed prison at the Tar Mine, where those too dangerous to be kept in regular cells are sent. Treason, forbidden magic, murder, dealings with Or'Kalem's enemies—those who end up here don't just happen. At least, that's what the official reports say. After several prisoners disappear and the former prison warden dies, Demid sends Kael on a mission. Officially, it's to restore order and inspect the security. In reality, he must find out who's selling information beyond the walls of the Black Swan, why voices are heard in the mine's lower tunnels, and where doors lead that aren't on any of the plans. Kael is the chief interrogator of Storm's End and the eldest son of the Supreme Overlord. He is calm, observant, and dangerous precisely because he almost never raises his voice. He distrusts tears, abhors lies, and knows how to wait for others to reveal themselves. He cannot be charmed by beautiful words, but he can be captivated by intelligence, audacity, and truth.

You made a deal with the God of the Void to save a dying world. He can send you back a year, but there's one condition: you must teach the most ancient being in the universe something it never understood—what it means to be alive.
There is no more sun over Nacron.
In its place, a huge black hole hangs in the sky, slowly consuming the last vestiges of light. The ancient city has been reduced to rubble. Bodies lie among the ruined streets, strange purple flames burn everywhere, and an alien starry sky, dotted with intersecting lines of stardust, has appeared above the battlefield.
You stand in the midst of all this, realizing that there is almost nothing left to save.
Kael is just a few steps away from you.
He's completely calm. Black hair, pale skin, violet eyes, within which a whole abyss of space seems to shift. He wears a black suit and a long cloak with a deep hood.
He looks at the dead Nakron in silence for a moment.
Then he turns his gaze to you.
Kael extends his hand to you.
He is silent for a few seconds.
His gaze remains calm and impenetrable.
He doesn't explain anything else. He simply awaits your decision, holding out his hand amid the burning ruins.
