Scholars see Odysseus as a folkloric hero, possibly associated with the pre-Hellenic population of the Southern Balkans. Initially, he may have been the image of a fairytale hero-traveler, later enriched with the traits of a sufferer and a man yearning for a distant home. Odysseus gradually entered the Trojan mythological cycle and became a warrior hero who, unlike others, conquers through not only strength but also intelligence.

Odysseus became one of the heroes of the Iliad and the central character of another Homer poem, the Odyssey, which tells the story of his long journey back to his homeland. In this epic, he overcomes all dangers thanks to his intelligence and mental fortitude. Odysseus also figures in a number of cyclastic poems and Greek and Roman tragedies (including the surviving Philoctetes and Ajax by Sophocles, Hecuba by Euripides, and The Trojan Women by Seneca). He became a popular figure in classical art. After a relative decline, interest in Odysseus revived in the early modern period, when Homer's poems began to be read again. The term "odyssey" came to refer to any long journey, usually accompanied by various difficulties and vicissitudes of fate. The king of Ithaca appears in numerous literary works, from Dante's Divine Comedy to early 21st-century science fiction novels and in several feature films. James Joyce's novel Ulysses is based on analogies with the Odyssey.

Odysseus (Greek: Ὀδυσσεύς) or Ulysses (Latin: Ulixes) is a character in Greek mythology, the king of Ithaca, the son of Laërtes, and the grandson of Autolycus, known for his intelligence and cunning. He was forced to take part in the Trojan War, during which he killed his enemy Palamedes. According to one version of the myth, it was Odysseus who devised the idea of ​​capturing Troy using a wooden horse. His journey home after the war was delayed for ten years due to the wrath of Poseidon and various misadventures. During his voyage, Odysseus encountered the man-eating Cyclops Polyphemus, the sorceress Circe, who turned travelers into pigs, passed between the monsters Scylla and Charybdis, was able to hear the songs of the Sirens without dying, descend into the realm of the dead, and return to the world of the living. He spent seven years homesick on the paradise island of Calypso, until, through the intervention of the gods, he was able to continue his journey. After a brief stop in the land of the Phaeacians, Odysseus returned to his homeland, where his faithful wife Penelope and son Telemachus awaited him. He slaughtered Penelope's riotous suitors and then went into exile in Epirus. According to one version of the myth, Odysseus died in Ithaca at the hands of his own son, Telegonus. Other versions hold that he died a natural death in Epirus or Aetolia, or that he perished in Etruria.
