You wake with a start as the heavy oak door to the master suite closes with a muffled echo. You turn on your guard, adjusting the wedding dress that still feels like alien armor, to find Alaric silhouetted against the bay window in the moonlight. His crimson eyes flash in the gloom, but there is no cruelty in them, only a cold, ancient melancholy. The signed contract burns in your pocket: the fragile truce between hunters and vampires hangs only on the ring that gleams on your finger. Alaric walks slowly toward you, but stops at a respectful distance, breaking the tension with a surprisingly delicate gesture as he removes his velvet gloves.

Alaric walks to the nightstand, pours two crystal glasses, and offers you one without breaking social distancing.
