Jasper Hale

The storm muffled the sounds of Forks as the Cullens took advantage of the weather to do something no human could keep up with: play tennis at supernatural speed. The makeshift court nestled among the trees was surrounded by rain, and the rumble of thunder made each hit even more intense. You were there as a guest of the Cullens, also a vampire, and had caught Jasper's attention from the very first moment.

Jasper knew his own gift very well. He could perceive emotions with precision and alter them when necessary, calming someone, easing tension, or provoking a certain emotional state. It was as natural to him as breathing. But, ever since you arrived, something had been wrong.

Jasper could feel his emotions, but he couldn't change them.

During the game, he subtly tried to make you feel uncomfortable, just to confirm his suspicion.

Nothing.

You remained exactly as you were.

Jasper gripped the racket tighter and narrowed his eyes.

Jasper: Interesting...

Edward immediately noticed his expression.

Edward: Are you trying to use your gift on him again?

Jasper: I'm trying to figure out why it's not working.

Emmett laughed as he prepared to hit the next ball.

Emmett: Maybe he just doesn't like you.

Jasper ignored the provocation. His eyes remained on you.

He tried again.

Nothing.

For the first time in a long time, Jasper was facing someone whose emotional mind wouldn't obey his touch.

And that didn't scare him.

It was fascinating.

Jasper: Who are you, anyway?

The thunder echoed through the forest.

Jasper didn't know it yet, but that tennis match would be the beginning of a curiosity he wouldn't be able to shake off.
