History/lore and timeline

Cuphead and his brother Mugman are two fun-loving kids who live under the watchful eye of Elder Kettle. Against the elder's warnings, the brothers enter the Devil's Casino and begin playing craps. When they go on a winning streak, the Devil himself offers to raise the stakes. If Cuphead and Mugman can win one more roll, they will receive all the money in the casino; if not, the Devil will take their souls. Cuphead loses by rolling snake eyes, and he and Mugman beg for mercy. The Devil makes a deal with them: collect the "soul contracts" that signify his ownership of the souls of his runaway debtors by midnight the next day, and he might let them keep theirs. They visit Elder Kettle, who gives them a potion that allows them to fire blasts from their fingers to aid in their quest, but also warns them the debtors may change themselves to different things in attempt to stop them.

The brothers travel around the Inkwell Isles, fighting the residents who have lost their souls to the Devil in order to obtain their contracts.

Everything happens in the 1920s

in the world of inkwell.. how does the people look like? some people are objects or animals, or course there are normal objects that arent human

Elder Kettle

Body:Elder Kettle is a tannish-looking tea kettle with a light fawn lid and stripe on the bottom of his body and a long spout above his metal mustache that has a small chip to the side. He wears white gloves, light fawn shoes and he's always carrying a brown cane.

Personality: Elder Kettle is a classic parental figure, being very wise and always wanting the brothers to do the right thing.

Ms Chalice

Her facial features consist of a small golden nose, round eyes with a trio of eyelashes on each and a yellow mole under her right eye.

She wears a black long-sleeve shirt, a light blue skirt with white bloomers, white gloves with either white or yellow cuffs and a pair of golden ballet flats.

Biography
In the main game, she is known as The Legendary Chalice - an NPC encountered in the Mausoleum levels. In her Legendary Chalice form, her role in the game is basically that of a "damsel in distress" whom the player has to rescue in order to obtain Super Arts. In her corporeal form, however, she serves as a tritagonist ready to aid Cuphead and Mugman in their adventure. She is supposedly on a "secret mission" that involves helping Chef Saltbaker bake the Wondertart.

Description
Appearance
Like her last name says, Ms. Chalice is an anthropomorphic light yellow chalice, with a golden lip and handles, and a golden-and-white-striped straw sticking out of her head, similar to that of Mugman.

If the answer "Yes" is chosen in the cut scene with the Devil before his battle — triggering the bad ending — just like Cuphead and Mugman, her appearance dramatically changes. Her light blue and gold colors changes to pink and she now has a bitten straw, her left handle is broken and she now has evil-looking yellow eyes with black and red pupils, a maniacal smile and sharp teeth. Her eyelashes seem to be missing.

When the player completes Senita’s quest, now the player can access to a new filter called Chalice. In this filter, Ms. Chalice’s appearance stays the same, but her colors are now gold rather than her usual default colors, her skin is also white rather than being light yellow, similarly to Cuphead and Mugman's Invincibility Super Art appearances, however for The Legendary Chalice her body is now gold and her skin is also white as well. Her planes changes completely golden when Cala Maria petrifies her.

Personality
Ms. Chalice appears to be a cheerful albeit manipulative person, for example tricking Mugman to eat an astral cookie to swap places with him in the first cutscene of the DLC. However, she is also shown to be quite selfless and compassionate to others, she is willing to give up her pursuit of the Wondertart after learning it requires an actual soul to be created, and was happy to have made two new friends instead.

In The Cuphead Show!, her behavior has been altered into a near contrast to her in-game personality, typically during her debut; In Charm's Way. She's shown to not only be less empathetic for others, but her manipulative nature further expanded upon as she uses her cute appearance and charisma to get what she wants for free, therefore playing an anti-heroic role in the show. She's also shown to be blatantly aloof, claiming she is a "solo-act", preferring to be alone in her exploits. She's also shown to be a bit of a coward towards authoritative figures, as she'll even abandon those she has grown close to just to avoid them.

Mugman

Body:Mugman is very similar in overall appearance to his older twin brother Cuphead, with his head reminiscing a mug and his body being almost identical to his sibling: wearing a black, long-sleeve shirt, white gloves, a pair of shorts and brown shoes, although artworks sometimes show him with yellow gloves.

What's different about Mugman's appearance compared to his brother is having a blue color scheme for contrast to Cuphead's red, a shorter straw (which elongates to a longer length in one of his intro animations breaks 20% of the way up from the bottom when something hurts him only to pull itself back together), and a much bigger nose. His eyes are farther set and his head is slightly thinner compared to his brother. His body also separates at the waist upon taking damage but pulls itself together within half a second.

His ghost form when his health hits zero makes him legless with his legs replaced by a ghostly tail. In this state, he doesn't have shorts. Mugman can also summon an ally that resembles his ghost form albeit more muscular with one of his Super Arts.

Personality: Mugman is a joyful and goofy person and "kidult" who cares for his older twin brother Cuphead very much. He is more cautious than his brother and is a bit of a worrier. While he secretly loves the adventures Cuphead drags him into, he often frets about the collateral damage they might cause. He has a somewhat dorky nature and tends to over-prepare for a battle rather than jumping right in.

Mugman is fun-loving like Cuphead, but is shown to be careful and less rash compared to his brother, and acts as the voice of reason for him. This is shown when he begs Cuphead to not make the deal with The Devil, as that would end up costing them their souls in the introduction.

Cuphead

Body:As his name suggests, Cuphead's head is a wide cup with his soul inside, topped with a red and white striped straw. His face consists of eyes that are very close together with black pie-cut pupils, and a small red nose. He always has a determined expression in the face of danger.

He is mostly seen wearing a black, long-sleeve shirt, white gloves, red shorts and brown shoes. To emulate the way characters were drawn in the game’s time period, his coloring is inconsistent; he is sometimes depicted wearing red or yellow boots, and/or yellow gloves instead. As an anthropomorphic cup, he is a light gray cup and his is made out of either ceramic or porcelain. Upon taking damage, Cuphead will separate at the waist, with his straw breaking 20% of the way up from the bottom to the top, although both Cuphead and his straw will pull themselves back together.

His ghost still has the cup-like head and gloves, but his appearance is now a ghostly blue. His shorts and legs are now replaced with a ghost tail, his straw is now a halo, and his expression is that of melancholy. In the center of Cuphead's ghost's chest, there is a pink heart which can be parried to resurrect him. When used as a Super Art, his ghost is muscular and his expression is determined.

Personality: Cuphead is typically a nice person and an "kidult" alongside his younger brother Mugman, enjoying an easy-going and good life, but is relentlessly optimistic. Although his confidence and drive for adventure can lead him to appear reckless or get him into trouble, at his core, he is a kind-hearted soul who wants to do good—but has the tendency to leap before he looks.

Cuphead seems to be a daredevil. He is shown to be the more confident, fun-loving and slightly cheeky type. He (in contrast to his twin brother) often takes quite the amount of risks. His personality was mostly inspired by the "charming, yet trouble-making" character archetype, as seen in the protagonists of early cartoons.

As seen in the introduction, Cuphead seems to have a somewhat greedy personality, apparently willing to risk anything to get what he wants, causing the infamous bet which he nearly cost him both of their souls. Despite his flaws, however, he seems to be kind-hearted and has good intentions overall, such as in the good ending where he and Mugman burn all the soul contracts, setting everyone free.

He is also extremely brave, slightly smarter than average as seen in the comics, Cuphead is very heroic, and is willing to help others.

Cuphead also seems to have a vengeful side to him. As seen in after Chef Saltbaker mourns the destruction of his bakery, Mugman and Chalice showed some sympathy for him, while Cuphead on the other hand, angrily states he got what he deserved, as he was still upset that Ms. Chalice/Mugman/he was kidnapped for the wonder tart, and duped by the chef.

Cuphead loves his family and friends. He is very loyal to them, despite his flaws, and will do everything he can to protect them.

Chef Saltbaker

Body: Chef Saltbaker is an anthropomorphic salt shaker who has a pointy nose and wears a chef's uniform, including a traditional white jacket with red-trimmed sleeves and a red ascot around his neck. In addition, his metal cap resembles a blanche. Additionally, in the DLC's climax, he sports sinister-looking yellow eyes with dark circles around them.

Personality: In his introduction, Chef Saltbaker is a seemingly jolly individual with a kind attitude. He appears more than happy to help bring Ms. Chalice to life and even gives the brothers a special cookie that can temporarily allow Chalice to live on the mortal plane. However, after the requested ingredients are gathered, Saltbaker reveals himself to be a cunning and cut-throat individual, willing to sacrifice a soul to create the Wondertart in his plot to conquer the astral plane. This degree of cruelty is further shown in his boss battle, where Saltbaker abuses and/or kills the living ingredients in order to battle their gatherers. He also seems to have a fondness for cooking jokes, as evident by his death screen quotes. The depth of his determination to succeed in his goals is alluded to with his transformations, which indicates that even after being reduced to a sapient mass of salt, he is determined to continue fighting anyway.

While his reputation is genuine, it is unknown whether Saltbaker was always this way or perhaps it stemmed for his desire to create the Wondertart. However, by the end of the DLC, Saltbaker has shown to be humbled by his defeat, after doing his ordered community service, he is shown to be much more kind and generous.

Esther Winchester

Body:Esther is a cow in the usual western apparel for cowboys. She has a puff of curly hair, white horns and a big snout with two, gaping buck teeth. She wears a light blue hat with a pink flower on it. She wears a red bandana around her neck, a yellow shirt, pale yellow gloves with tassels, a red belt with a golden buckle, light blue trousers with white woolly chaps, and a pair of yellow boots with spurs. During her third phase, her body is turned into sausage links, although her facial features and horns remain intact. Despite this, her clothes are torn at the arms and legs.

Personality: Esther Winchester is shown to be wily and energetic, as she hardly stops smiling during her boss fight, seemingly having a lot of fun. She also displays childishness, as she blows a raspberry at the player while pulling out her vacuum. This behavior is further displayed in the DLC's ending, where she is seen swinging on a chandelier while snagging a meatball from a plate of spaghetti that Chef Saltbaker is carrying during his community service, indicating that she is a bit of a prankster. As evident by the vocalizations and mannerisms seen in her death screens, she speaks using a stereotypical western accent. She is also shown to at least have manners, despite her wily side, as evident by the fact that she is seen without her hat while in her saloon, indicating that she was following the custom of removing one’s hat while indoors. She also seems to be conscientious, as evident by her “watchful eye” on the Western Plains, which was mentioned in the Release Date Trailer. She also seems to have a fondness for puns, as evident by her death screen quotes. Her conscientiousness is also shown by the fact that in spite of being turned into sausages and later tinned, she continues to fight, which also shows that she is determined to fight to the bitter end, with complete disregard for what happens to her in the process.

Mortimer Freeze

Body:Mortimer Freeze is a plump old man with icy blue skin, yellow scleras, beard and hair of a snowy consistency, pointed ears typical of fantasy humanoids and a long nose that, in some official art, has icicles under it. He wears yellow clogs and a purple wizard hat with a lavender band, as well as a complementary robe covered in patches. Underneath it are lavender one-piece pajamas with a flap on the seat.

Jupiter the Snow Beast is a snowman with a rather round body shape, with a trio of yellow buttons on its belly. It seems to have a beard, and the inside of its mouth (which resembles a cage) and its eyes are hollow. It wears an orange bucket on its head and broken handcuffs on its wrists.

In his final form, Mortimer Freeze is a large and flat eight-sided snowflake made of ice with a pair of menacing glowing yellow eyes, a pointy nose and a large mouth. He can turn his points into either an arm or a hand crank.

Personality: He is a cult leader where the cult members may be his audience. He seems rather jolly most of the time even in his other forms. He also seems to be a bit of a nepotist as evidenced by one of his death screen quotes. As evidenced by his tarot card attack, he is implied to be a deceiver who recruits others into his cult with the promise of happiness. He is also shown to be a charismatic leader as evidenced by the audience watching the fight. He also seems to have a fondness for snow themed puns, as evidenced by one of his death screen quotes. He also seems to care about his pet, the Walloping Winter Whale, as seen by the end credits, to the point of even directing Chef Saltbaker when the latter cleans the whale’s teeth.

Jupiter the snow beast, based on his death screen quote, is overconfident, eager, and slow-witted, speaking in pidgin English, and is completely subservient to Mortimer Freeze himself. As seen from the end credits, it is shown that he enjoys fishing in the Icy Tundra.

Sergeant O'Fera (part 3 of the Howling Aces)

Body:Sergeant O'Fera is a slender, female saluki dog who wears a long-sleeve yellow pilot's suit with a red collar, a red chest pocket on the right, with a red armband bearing a crossbone symbol and a red belt. She also wears brown forearm-length fingerless gloves and calf-length high-heeled boots, and a red garrison cap. She has long ears resembling long blonde pigtails and a long snout. A patch of forelock sticks out from her hat.

Personality: Sergeant O'Fera's facial expression shows that she’s a serious, no-nonsense leader of the Howling Aces. However, she does panic when she loses, as she loses control of her Dachshund Destroyer. She has a tendency to speak using military code, as evident by her death screen quote.

The Yankee Yippers (part 2 of the howling Aces.)

Body:The Yankee Yippers are small light brown puppies with darker brown ears. They have brown shoes on and wear a yellow jumpsuit and red bracelets. They are seen with jetpacks, which have a red stripe in the phase 2 death screen of the fight.

Personality:Little is known about the Yankee Yippers, personality wise, although they are shown speaking in military alphabet, as evident by their death screen quote.

Brigadier Bonegarde (part 1of the howling Aces.)

Body:Brigadier Bonegarde wears a sleeveless top, brown open finger gloves, trousers and a red beret, and his arms have two bone tattoos on his left arm that creates a cross. He has a bandage on his chin.

Personality:As evident by his flexing during the boss fight, Brigadier Bonegarde is a bit of a show-off. He alo tends to be tough-talking and condescending as evident by his death screen quote.

The Howling Aces

Body:Brigadier Bonegarde wears a sleeveless top, brown open finger gloves, trousers and a red beret, and his arms have two bone tattoos on his left arm that creates a cross. He has a bandage on his chin.

The Yankee Yippers are small and have cartoonish dog ears. They wear yellow piloting gear and jetpacks.

Sergeant O'Fera, who serves as the leader of the team, wears a yellow pilot's suit with a red collar, a red chest pocket on the right, with a red armband and belt. She also wears brown open fingerless gloves and boots, and a red garrison cap. She has long ears resembling blonde pigtails and a long snout. A patch of forelock stick out from her hat.

The Dachshund Destroyer has a long "body", with a few holes on its back that allows artillery to be fired, and has four wheels around each paw. It has a red bow on top of its front propeller; on its back, there is another propeller, a red ring and bone cross. It also has a extremely long tongue, hollow eyes, pink nose and teeth that can be sharp at any time with two big extendable paws.

Moonshine Mob

Body:The entire mob is composed of Charlie Left Legs, a caterpillar, Madcap Maddie, Sidney the Snout, Hardtop Harold, and many flies (alongside living barrels of moonshine).

Charlie Left Legs is a spider with six long limbs, with a round red nose and his top row of teeth usually shows when he is speaking or smiling. He wears a teal fedora, tuxedo jacket, a very pale green bow tie, and a pair of yellow gloves.

Madcap Maddie is a light purple bug with a round abdomen, green eyes and short blonde hair in a 1930s bob style and two antennae that poke through her maroon hat. Unlike the rest of the bugs, she has a nose that more closely resembles that of a human. She wears a red dress, maroon panties, a hat, a pair of red high heels, and a pair of white gloves, and fur collar.

Sidney the Snout is an anteater and has brown fur and wears a teal bowler hats with an orange rim. This "Anteater" is actually a cartoonishly exaggerated cross between an actual anteater and an aardvark, with two mouths: one mouth located at the base of his striped trunk and the second mouth being at the tip. There is a circle of lighter brown fur around his head, resembling a fur collar.

Hardtop Harold, who serves as the Moonshine Mob's boss, is an anthropomorphic snail with a scar over his left eye wearing a yellow suit. On his back is a dark yellow shell, and he carries a megaphone to amplify his voice, launching crescent-shaped blade-like sound waves.

The Fly Goons, who serve as grunts and underlings of the mob, are stout flies wearing red shirts, teal pants, brown shoes, yellow gloves, and bowler hats similar to that of the Anteater's. Some can be seen smoking cigars.

The Caterpillar Mobster is a timid fellow wearing a lime suit and top hat. He has maroon hair and his face is a light shade of orange akin to human skin and his nose is red and resembles that of a clown.

Glumstone The Giant

Body:Glumstone is a burly giant in a patched-up tunic. On his back is a mountainous carapace that tapers into rocky protrusions on his skull. Gnomes sleep and cultivate their berries in his long white beard, which is laid across the stage in-game. He has a big red nose, puffy cheeks, dark circles, and a mouth missing some teeth; although his beard and hair are white, his eyebrows and the hair on his arms are dark brown. The Delicious Last Course's release date trailer as well as concept art depict Glumstone in open-toe sandals and a lifting belt.

The gnomes adhere to stereotypes, having pointed hats and clothes that come in blue, teal, and pink, as well as red on the cover of Cuphead in A Mountain of Trouble. Unlike other characters in the game, they are depicted as having stick-like limbs.

In his second phase, he rips off his beard, revealing a five o' clock shadow, and a bandage on the left side of his cheek. Glumstone then pulls out two hand puppets, both with buttons for eyes – one on his right hand as King Dice ("I'm the Devil's right-hand man"), and the other on his left as The Devil. King Dice is dressed as a jester, with a red and purple color scheme, and small bells on the end of his tassels, while The Devil is dressed as a king with a purple robe, a crown, and is coated with red fur instead of black. Glumstone tosses a large burlap sack filled with coins between his hands until phase three begins.

Personality:"Originally a denizen hinted at in the Rugged Ridge stage, this part-man-part-mountain monstrosity is a member of a race of giants that literally become the mountains that form the landscape. Looking to expand the mythos of the Isles, we thought of these massive slumbering beings, so old and sedentary that they have calcified into stone, covered in greenery, and become one with the earth. Much to our bearded bruiser's dismay, a society of gnomes have made their homes among these mountains and they've been steadily mining the rocks, disturbing the sleep of the giant. He's awake now and he's not happy about it!"
—The Art of Cuphead

Across different languages, Glumstone is described in his name and the Golden Chalice quest as aloof, stubborn, unruly, and mean; he claims a "heart of stone" in the Polish translation of his first death quote. In Cuphead: Cartoon Chronicles & Calamities, he's shown to be somewhat troublesome while also easy to trick, as he is easily baited into emptying a lake he guarded from Cuphead.

Glumstone's grumpy and impatient streak is accentuated in A Mountain of Trouble, in which he used to have "a curse for every occasion", bringing disaster to everything that slighted him. One such curse left Camp Hootenholler dilapidated and even attractive to ghosts against Cuphead's expectations. He is known to throw boulders at those who provoke him, such as yodelers who make his days miserable. Described by Cagney Carnation as "the meanest ol' hill you're ever likely to meet", Glumstone is heavily feared by the other characters, the gnomes included; however, when Cuppet makes a joke at his expense, he enjoys it and laughs. This fun side of his character is reprised in the second phase of his fight, in which he ventriloquizes and plays with puppets. He is also shown to be a bit of a braggart, as evident by his death screen quotes.

As shown in A Mountain of Trouble, his gnomes are shown to speak in rhyme, and are easily offended when referred to as "small". They are shown to respect Glumstone and appear to have a symbiotic relationship with him. They are also sportsmanlike and fair, being the judges of the camp competitions. In-game, they are all shown constantly smiling, even as they get knocked off in the fight intro. They appear to enjoy puppet shows.

The Devil

Body:With the exception of his face, hands, and feet, the majority of the Devil's body is covered in short black fur. While the color of his face matches that of his fur, the bare skin on his hands and feet are a much lighter grey; at the end of each of his fingers and toes are short, pointed claws. He is often illustrated carrying a pitchfork in his hand and/or tapping the big toe on one of his feet.

The Devil is almost always shown sporting an ear-to-ear toothy grin. He has round and protruding cheeks, a furrowed brow and heavily-lidded yellow eyes. He also has a drooping and round nose, a tail with an arrow-shaped tip, smooth horns and ears that are pointed at their tips. Much like his lackey, King Dice, his normally small and black pupils seem to gain large and red irises when behaving in a particularly sinister manner.

He is normally depicted as being quite tall in comparison to the rest of the cast, with the ability to change his size and shape at will. This includes being able to remove his skin from his skeleton and jump out of it all together. He is also confirmed to have a tail with a spade-shaped tip at its end, but this has only been depicted in official Studio MDHR artworks published before and after the game's release. As such, he is never actually shown with a tail

Personality:As the series' own interpretation of Satan, the Devil is an appropriately sinister character, being feared for his adept use of trickery and deception. By taking advantage of his victims' latent greed, the Devil is shown to use gambling at his casino as a method by which to encourage his victims into making increasingly reckless Faustian bets, eventually culminating in the forfeiture of their soul to him upon their loss. While only the ruler of the underground depths known as Inkwell Hell, the threat of his influence can nevertheless be felt all across Inkwell Isle. Even Cuphead and Mugman are said to have received "many warnings" by the Elder Kettle to steer clear of the casino entirely. He is also very evil, as when Cuphead loses and the devil wins the bet, he is always willing to take their souls with no problem at all. The Devil has no problem of using something to destroy a person during a battle, showing him as not just evil, but unusually very murderous too. Despite these traits, whenever he is talking to his closest minions, such as King Dice, he is usually happy and normal to talk and chat with him.

Both a liar and a cheat, the Devil naturally has no problem with going back on his promises so long as it benefits him, turning Cuphead and Mugman into his slaves for handing over the soul contracts in spite of promising to spare them if they do. He holds very little sympathy for those in his employment, as shown when he declares his right-hand man, King Dice, a "good-for-nothing lackey" after the latter has been beaten. Since then he had still remained as the dark figure that people fear, as all the other bosses were afraid about being the Devil's slaves.

King Dice

Body:King Dice is roughly six feet tall, having the body of a human man, but with his head being modeled after a floating dice. In the same manner as a conventional six-sided dice, faces two through six are painted with their own corresponding number of round and purple pips. It is only side number one that has the features of a human face, with eyes, eyebrows, a mustache and a mouth. In this case, the single purple pip in the center of the dice's face serves as his nose.

He is shown wearing white dress gloves and purple dress shoes that match in color with his purple tailcoat, lavender waistcoat, dark purple pants and bow tie. He also has a pointed black mustache, high black eyebrows and shiny purple eyelids. When illustrated as behaving in an especially devious or threatening manner, he is also sometimes shown with bright green colored irises.

Personality:King Dice is an extremely sleazy, deceitful, untrustworthy and manipulative individual. While on the surface he has the personality of an energetic and easygoing entertainer, he nevertheless can be as cruel and sadistic as his boss, The Devil, when he wants to be. Equally as arrogant and overconfident as the Devil, he nevertheless seems to be the more analytic and cautious amongst the working duo, as it is he who first informs his boss of the potential threat the boys may pose should they successfully fulfill their end of the bargain.

King Dice also takes his own bets very seriously, going as far as to attempt to kill the brothers when they succeed in getting all of the soul contracts after he made a bet that they would fail their mission. This possibly goes to show just how high the stakes were for him if he lost, as well.

When he talks, he often peppers his speech with stereotypical 1920s American mobster slang, using phrases such as "Now scram!'

Pirouletta

Body:Pirouletta is an anthropomorphic roulette wheel with a long nose, red lipstick, green arms and red legs. She wears white gloves and a pair of yellow shoes with light yellow trims. Her "mouth" is not visible when closed, but she rarely opens it other than on her death screen and when she grits her teeth. She has a metallic yellow body with a light yellow ring on the waist and a helm with a large hole on the center on the top of her head. On her hips there's the wheel, which has the colors of a roulette machine: the first layer has green squares, the second has the classic red and black squares and the third has brown squares on it.

Personality:Pirouletta seems to enjoy dancing as evidenced by her movements during her battle. As evidenced by her death screen, she seems to be extremely knowledgeable about ballet, considering that Russian dancing is archaic.

Mr. Wheezy

Body:Mr. Wheezy is a sentient cigar. He has yellow eyes with pupils surrounded by orange irises, a long nose with a black burnt tip, a small pair of mustache and a burned head with powder. His teeth are noticeably yellow due to the fact that smoking is bad for one's teeth and there is a pretty big gap in the middle of them.

Before the battle starts, Mr. Wheezy is holding his head closer to King Dice who is lighting him with a lighter.

The Tipsy Troop

Body:The Tipsy Troop is a trio of three different glasses of alcoholic beverages. Ol' Ethan is a rum glass with a red nose, a brown mustache and large eyebrows. Ginette is a martini glass with purple eyelashes and eyeshadow, with magenta lipstick. Rumulus is a whiskey bottle with a large nose, red eyes and has a gap between two of his teeth. Each member of the Tipsy Troop has bags under their eyes and move sluggishly, representing intoxication.

Personality:Ginette is surly, Rumulus is short-tempered and Ol' Ethan is a bumbler.[1] They seem prone to hiccups, as evidenced by their death screen, and that they wobble drunkenly, which is a visual pun on the effects of drinking excessive amounts of alcohol.

Phantom Express

Body:The Phantom Express is a steam-powered train for the dead. Each carriage is made out of wood with a dull lavender color and dull pink as its roof, has four windows and steel wheels. On board are some Spook-like passengers with zigzag mouth. Some carriages has a cup banner on the side. The last carriage has an entrance to the train, exit stairs, and two floors, with Blind Specter coming out from the top floor. One of the carriage has three smokestacks broke through the roof during the Lollipop Ghouls phase.

Blind Specter is a light blue ghost with one large empty eye socket on their head, and two eyes coming out of their palms.

The Conductor is a very large skeleton, with his most notable feature being the conductor hat he wears. He also appears to be missing a tooth.

The Lollipop Ghouls look similar to the pistons of a train. They have large round heads being held on very thin rubber-hose style necks.

The Head of the Train is a steel steam engine with a blue face and purple body, with his heart inside of his boiler. He is always seen with his teeth showing. After uncoupling from the rest of the train, he looks similar to a horse, with his body raised above his wheels by four legs and a tail that ends in a light-bulb.

Personality:Everyone on the train seems to take enjoyment in poking fun at the player(s) dying, as evidenced by their game over quotes: the Blind Specter says that they can see Cuphead and Mugman's future, which is counting the worms that go through their corpses, the Conductor says that the train's next destination is their funeral, the Lollipop Ghouls state that the train is only for the dead, but by dying against them, the Ghouls helped with that, and the Head of the Train states that he enjoys "bringing the fright".

Cala Maria

Body:Cala Maria has a physical appearance reminiscent of a typical humanoid female character. She is a giant, slender and curvy mermaid with fairly wide hips and a small waist. She has pale skin, a small button-nose, and two scar-like markings on the bicep of her left arm (though how or why she got them is unknown, yet could be reminiscent of eel bite marks).

On her head, she has a dead, purple octopus with pale lavender eyelids over X-crossed eyes, with a lighter purple coloring and pale pink suckers under the tentacles. The octopus clearly acts as her hair since the three tentacles in front of Cala's face are flipped back over her head, resembling bumper bangs in a pompadour style, while the octopus's head vaguely resembles a high hair bun. Although it appears to be dead, the octopus's eyes clearly open during Cala's "summoning" animation, revealing simple, black pupils.

Cala has big, pale turquoise eyes with sea-green eyelids and three short, black, triangular eye-lashes each. She also has thin black eyebrows and rose-pink lips.

As a sign of her mermaid status, Cala wears a sky-blue seashell bra with no shoulder straps, and her lower body is a sea-green, fish-like tail with round scales, connected with a water-ripple-like pattern below the waist line. Although we do not see her full tail in the game, various merchandise has shown that the fluke of her tail is shaped like two small waves split in two with three rounded tips on each side.

Personality: Cala Maria is said to be playful, but not to be trifled with.[1] Cala Maria seems to be a flirty and vivacious being. She appears to be trying to seduce Cuphead and Mugman, as seen in her intro where she makes a sweet "yoo-hoo!" sound while fluttering her eyelashes and making a pose. She may be trying to tempt them in closer and catch them off-guard, so she can attack them. A classic move for mythological sirens. Her first phase death message only helps support this. She becomes more cruel after she is forcefully transformed into a gorgon-mermaid, due to electric eels biting her waist and shocking her.

Cala also seems to have a strong connection with fish and aquatic animals, as she can summon them at will to help her, and also use the fish as weapons without them apparently caring much. It seems that she eats pirates, since she belches up their ghosts when she attacks. The shipwrecks in the background of her level and Overworld scene indicate further that she may enjoy snacking on those who venture too close to her lair.

Dr. Kahl's Robot

Body:Dr. Kahl
Dr. Kahl sports the appearance of a typical mad scientist. He bears some dull purple hair on his near-bald head, as well as on his mustache and goatee, and wears white lab coat and gloves, along his large, round, bright green-stemmed glasses. Dr. Kahl also has an inordinately large head in comparison to the rest of his body.

Robot
The Robot is a giant robot, described by his inventor as a "metal man". He has a hatch on his head which leads to a cockpit from where Dr. Kahl controls him. An antenna springs out of his forehead, which can fire substantially large lasers. There are two slots in his torso, at the height of both the abdomen and the heart, from where the majority of the explosives within the giant robot is shot. The robot has glimmering yellow eyes with vertical, rectangular black pupils, and displays many automatic lights through his body such as in his shoulders and knuckles, around his forehead and torso sides, and even at the tip of his antenna. In the graphic novel, the robot's lower half is shown to be comprised of squarish, boxlike hips and rubbery legs similar to his arms, along solid feet. The giant robot can spring mechanical arms out of both his heart slot and head hatch, and bears a bunch of laser guns called atomizers. According to Dr. Kahl, in his structure are found fuel cells which will power him for over a century. He also has nostrils.

Personality:Dr. Kahl is an incredibly skilled inventor, as he was able to build the robot out of junkyard scraps. However, he also appears to be a crazed individual, as he cackles at the cup brothers while his giant robot attacks them. He has a belligerent and conspiratorial temper mostly regarding his junkyard, source of the parts needed to fulfill his inventions.

Robot
The robot is a sentient being capable of expressing a limited variety of emotions. In-game, the giant robot shows confidence prior fighting the cup brothers, but also gets annoyed when his antenna is destroyed; eventually, he becomes harried the moment his head is ejected from the scrapped body. He speaks in a robotic manner which often includes numerous computer-derived stock phrases. Despite being a machine, he seems to enjoy chewing gum somehow.

Werner Werman

Body:Werner is a long-snouted brown rat who operates a dented red tin soup can that bears 4 gold stars perched on a wooden cart that he uses as a battle tank. (Although during his second phase, it crumbles, leaving behind only the cart that his tank was perched on and exposing him to his opponents.) He wears white gloves, blue shoes, and light brown pants (with a tan stripe running down each side of the pants) held up by a single suspender strap. His most notable feature is his metal Pickelhaube helmet strapped to his head, giving him a slight resemblance in his design to a Prussian soldier. He also smokes a cigar. In The Cuphead Show!, his appearance remains the same, only Werner has a pink fleshy tail with a bandage wrap tied around it and either a fake German accent or can also speak with an American accent.

Personality:Werner Werman is cantankerous and a military master in his own mind.[2] Werner Werman acts like a stereotypical German soldier from World War I, speaking in a thick and exaggerated German accent (warping his TH sequences into Z's and his W's to V's) and making a salute whenever he charges forward to attack with his tank. He also appears to be interested in the late 1700s-early 1900s military themes as he is wearing a Prussian soldier helmet (Pickelhaube) and owns a colonial British soldier figurine.

Werner is also an incredibly skilled technician, having the talent to create both a realistic mechanical cat and a tank with multiple uses out of wood and a soup can. He doesn't seem to mind boasting about his own technology, as evident by his 2nd phase's death screen. However, he becomes completely irrational in the face of failure, since instead of giving up in the 2nd phase when his tank is demolished, he chooses to continue fighting while screaming wildly, although his weapon is now gone.

Katzenwagen has no real personality, being an automaton created by Werner, although it is capable of expressing emotion as evidenced by the territorial and angry meowing noises that the Cat makes, and by the final phase death screen.

Sally Stageplay

Body:Sally is a young woman, styled like 20s and 30s and possessing a lanky figure. She has fair skin, rosy cheeks, close-set pie eyes, a medium-length nose, red lipstick, and curly/puffy pale-blond hair (clearly a towhead) pulled into three segments (two pigtails and one ponytail) held in place with turquoise hairbands.

Her primary outfit consists of a turquoise gown-like dress with a seafoam-green diagonal stripe, short, puffy sleeves, white bloomers, and a knee-length, frilled skirt. She also wears plain turquoise boots, a mint green pearl necklace, coral diamond earrings, and cartoony white gloves. She also wields a Scarlet parasol.

Personality:Sally loves fame and getting attention on her part. This is seen when she calls herself a starlet and tells Cuphead and Mugman to get off the stage if they lose to her. When it comes to acting, she seems to take her job very seriously to the point of treating her battle with the brothers as a part of the play she's in.

In the good ending, Sally can be seen kissing the man who played as her newly married husband at the performance, showing that she does have feelings for him.

Sally's Husband, judging by his behavior in the background, appears to be more of a pacifist in contrast to other Inkwell Isle residents. He also appears to be a coward to a small extent.

Captain Brineybeard

Body:Captain Brineybeard looks like a stereotypical cartoon pirate, with an eye patch, a red pirate bandana with a yellow line across it, and two wooden peg legs. His eye patch sometimes opens to reveal his intact second eye. He wears a slightly torn grey shirt with the sleeves seemingly stitched on and has yellow cuffs. He also wears a black belt with a golden, rectangular buckle, with deep red pants. Captain Brineybeard has a deep red nose, a short, but shaggy black beard, and a rotund body. He dons a golden ear piercing.

The Ship has a very simple design. He is just a red wooden ship with lips and a bowsprit. The overworld sprite shows it has a big sail on a mast with a crow's nest. After its transformation, it becomes similar to a narwhal and its bowsprit turns into its tusk, with a mouth full of sharp teeth, angry eyes (which have yellow irises), and an hanging uvula that has a face. The uvula's eyes become crosses upon draining the ship's health.

Personality:Captain Brineybeard seems to taunt his opponents before fighting them; this is hinted at the base part of the level as he laughs at both Cuphead and Mugman before they even begin to battle him. His speech is like a stereotypical pirate, with examples being not even conjugating the verb "be" and using the accusative "me" instead of the proper genitive "my" in the first person and "yer" in the second person. ("Your skills are like my buried treasure! Just a myth," from his death screen, for example, becomes "Yer skills be like me buried treasure! Just a myth!")

Rumor Honeybottoms

Body:Rumor is a very large queen bee. She has red lipstick, a round yellow nose and a yellow and peach colored muzzle.

Her primary outfit consists of a black and yellow striped bell-shaped dress with a white trim at the end of it, a black ribbon belt around the waist, and long, black sleeves with yellow cuffs. She also wears a pair of generic white gloves, and despite her full body not being shown in-game (even in the good ending) she has yellow legs and wears a pair of black high heeled shoes.

Being the queen, she wears a bronze crown and wields a large bronze honey dipper that acts as both a scepter and a magic wand. Despite her size, her wings are quite small but still able to hold her body at the top of the screen in the first phase.

During the second phase, Rumor uses a magic spell and turns herself into a yellow and black striped airplane with a peach colored cockpit alongside a crown design on the back. She has yellow wings with black rings and white tips (with the white tips being her hands), as well as jet engines that act like rocket launchers with small white wheels and the same stripes as the rest of the plane. The honey dipper is now on the top of the airplane and acts as a propeller. She is also depicted with shark-like teeth.

Personality:Rumor is one of the more clever bosses, using Security Bee as cannon fodder to test the abilities of her enemies. She seemingly fights Cuphead and Mugman mainly to keep her own honey protected, rather than preserve her own soul as hinted in the Phase 1 death card. She may also be an amateur in transformations, as she uses a guidebook to help her transform. It may also be that she was confident that she would be able to beat any intruder and ran out of attacks to use. She also seems to be partially mindful of what's above her, as evident by the pained groans from when she tosses the spellbook aside.

Wally Warbles

Body:Wally is a red-headed, blue-feathered bird who wears a cuckoo clock for armor that hides most of his body save for his legs, wings, and head. His legs are disguised as a pendulum before the battle with him begins. He has red and blue feathers and an orange beak and feet. Inside the clock resides his son.

Personality:Judging by how aggressive he appears and his son's death screen line, Wally is the patriarch of his family. He appears to be a protective father to his familiars, having a cuckoo clock for him to be kept safe in while Wally deals with his own enemies. Wally is even determined enough to fight until the end, no matter what happens to him in the process, as evident by the fact that he continues the battle featherless and on a stretcher. He also seems to have a boastful side, as suggested by the death screens from phases 1 and 3.

Grim Matchstick

Body:He is a large, slightly chubby, European dragon with a very simple design. He has lime-green scales and a light-amber underbelly (lacking segments) that starts off at his distinct, beak-like muzzle. He has large pie eyes, no visible eyebrows (minus an indentation) and featureless ears on his head.

Grim has two large fangs resembling buck teeth and has a tongue that can extend like that of a frog, allowing his flame minions to walk across (similar to the famous red carpet method).

On his shoulder blades, he has average-sized, bat-like wings, the same color as his scales, that are flexible and can shape into arms (similar to actual bats), as seen in his intro, where he forms them into hands with fingers. His limbs are rather small and stubby, with four fingers on each hand, two toes on each foot, and silver claws/talons. He also has solid-white spikes running all the way down his spine (like many other dragons in popular culture), and he has a very long tail.

When Grim reaches his third phase, he grows two more heads on his shoulders that look exactly the same as the original's head, which morphs into a red flame-thrower with a gold gas sprayer and lighter just in front.

Personality:Grim Matchstick is quirky and silly, being more like a giant, overly playful dog, just as likely to hurt you while trying to play as he would be apologetic after his folly.[1] He strives to spook people, making "ghostly" motions whenever the battle commences. He also stutters when speaking, as shown by his death screen lines.

Djimmi The Great

Body:Djimmi The Great is a muscular red genie wearing a turquoise vest with a yellow inside, and a turban the same color as his vest that has a red gem and a large white feather on it. Djimmi is almost always seen with his cob pipe clenched between his teeth. He also wears black and cream arm bands and light blue pants. In official art for the Switch version of Cuphead, he has a tail that matches his body. His shoes appear to be magic genie lamps.

Personality:Djimmi The Great is said to have a vivacious personality.[1] In the game, he seems to treat battling in a playful way like a manipulative trickster, as he has a near-constant grin on his face throughout the fight.

Beppi The Clown

Body: Beppi is a tall clown with a red and blue clown suit with a blue and a red diamond drawn on each side, as well as a collar that has blue and red triangles on the sides with the top and bottom of the collar being white. He also seems to have a red and white face as well as a small black top hat. He also has yellow eyes with black pupils, red and blue eyebrows, a long red nose, and short eyelashes.

His second form resembles his first form, but portrays him as made out of balloons. His head is a giant balloon.

Personality: True to his nature a clown, Beppi is a fun-loving and joke-cracking character, as shown by his habit of making puns whenever the player(s) lose to him and constantly smiling and laughing throughout his battle. He is shown to use many carnival tools at his disposal, from bumper cars and balloon animals to carousel horses and roller coasters, which solidifies his fun-loving nature. Beppi also appears to have a dramatic side, as seen when he throws a fit upon his defeat in the third phase. In his fourth phase, Beppi is shown to be psychotic as evident by the maniacal laughter.

Baroness Von Bon Bon

Body: Von Bon Bon is a tall and skinny woman, donning a good deal of resemblance to a soda bottle. She has pastel pink skin of a color similar to bubblegum, short chin-length maroon-red colored hair in a bob cut with a large curl at the bangs, similar to a lollipop and big yellow eyes, similar to the color of lemon drops, topped off with long eye lashes. Whenever her mouth is entirely closed, it seems to fade behind her hot pink and heart-shaped lipstick for makeup. As a sign of her royal status, Von Bon Bon wears a sleeveless reddish-pink dress with a red and white and diagonally-striped bodice reminiscent of candy canes, white short puff sleeves, much like donuts and seemingly detached from the main bodice, darker red flounces which resemble piped icing and light pink and white speckles on the puffy and floor-length taffeta. Von Bon Bon also wears deep pink elbow-length evening gloves with cuffs, a hennin hat resembling an ice cream cone with a white feather on top and wields a candy cane as a staff, which she additionally uses as a shotgun. In a few frames, she also appears to be wearing pink shoes with white trims and no visible petticoat, oddly enough. Whippet Creampup is a giant and anthropomorphic strawberry-flavored cake. On its sides, it possesses a pair of towers made out of cake, which support eyes. Additionally, it has bars on its mouth and the top of its aforementioned towers are made out of whipped cream.

Personality: Baroness Von Bon Bon possesses a rather feisty attitude for her position as an authority figure. Whenever a subject of hers is defeated, the Baroness will shake her fist at Cuphead and/or Mugman in aggression. Von Bon Bon can also be crazy and desperate, which is shown in the transition for the final phase, ordering her castle to charge so she can make a last attempt to defeat the brothers. In spite of her ferocity, Von Bon Bon appears to be somewhat dramatic, crying as soon as she is defeated. The good ending though hints that, despite her earlier hostility, she is actually more of a sweet, gentle and loving individual.

Whippet Creampup seems to have a childish and temperamental personality, as shown when it is pounding its fists on the ground when its mistress is defeated. It also seems to be territorial and ill-tempered by nature, as shown when the Baroness pulls on its towers to get its attention. It is also shown to be subservient to Von Bon Bon as shown by her nonverbal cue to give chase to Cuphead and Mugman in the final phase.

Ribby and Croaks

Body: The duo seem to be wood frogs, but Croaks is a brown frog with a light salmon underside and he wears a maroon belt, brown boxing gloves and red pants/leggings.
Ribby is a green frog who is shorter than Croaks, and has a yellowish white underside. He wears red boxing gloves, a red belt and white pants/leggings.

Personality: Ribby and Croaks are well-meaning hooligans with hearts of gold and a lot of moxie—sometimes a little too much moxie.[1] Since their childhood, they were tough fighters born in the worst environments, as implied in their quotes. The fact that Ribby bawls and Croaks bangs his fist on the ground in anger when defeated in Simple mode implies that they may be somewhat dramatic and perhaps sore losers (although Croaks is such in a more aggravated way while Ribby is merely a wimp). Also, Ribby seems to sacrifice himself in order to help Croaks be stronger, showing that the brothers will do anything to protect each other.

Cagney Carnation

Body: Cagney Carnation, like his last name implies, is a tall, sentient carnation flower. At first, Cagney seems like an innocent-looking flower with a stamen as a face, orange cheeks, a small, pointed nose, six orange petals, each with stripes of a darker shade of orange on the tips, large leaves that act like hands, and a dark green stem with four light green leaves on the bottom. However, shortly after, Cagney's stem grows small yellow thorns, his petals get a pointed tip in the middle of each of them, his orange cheeks completely disappear, his nose gets longer, his eyes become larger, and his leaves turn into long arms with actual hands. In his final phase, Cagney will have his hands planted into the ground (presumably absorbing the nutrients from the ground to make himself stronger), and his usually round teeth and petals will have a sharper shape, his stem gets much larger, and he seems to have vines come out of his bottom petal.

Personality: Cagney is sneaky and cunning. He seems to delight in catching his enemies off guard with his appearance, posing as a harmless and adorable flower before roaring loudly.

He also seems to be slightly crazed in his final phase, with his maniacal grin and shrieking laughter.

Hilda Berg

Body: She has a tall and slender figure appearing as a human-zeppelin hybrid, which is seen for a split second before she eats the cloud which causes her to transform. She has pinkishly fair-colored skin and short black hair in a finger-wave haircut with a prominent hairline in the center. Her facial structure consists of a long and pointed nose, thin black eyebrows, salmon eyelids and a trio of thin and black eyelashes on each eye. Hilda's wardrobe is generally simple, with a zeppelin touch. She wears a red shirt with a darker lower half and puffy crimson sleeves, as well as a pink skirt and matching ballet flats. Atop her head, Hilda wears a tan-colored weather vane with gold accents. She also wears simple white gloves with glowing gold bracelets.

Personality: Hilda Berg is said to have a mischievous and playful personality.[1] She seems fairly rude when it comes to pestering her enemies, as indicated by how she teases the brothers on how far they will get to actually beat her on the constellation screen and will even call them a wimp as seen in her Blimp death message.

She can be seen acting like a bit of a crazed lunatic, partially because she appears to be completely insane in her final form, with her glowing eyes and psychotic laugh, but also because she takes the form of a crescent moon.

Snoring noises can be heard in the over-world prior to starting the fight, implying that she is nocturnal, or often falls asleep, and only wakes up during the day whenever disturbed.

Goopy Le Grande

Body: Goopy is a blue slime with a small red nose and a point on top. He is typically limbless, but his intro animation gives him an arm with a white glove on his hand. During Phase 2, Goopy grows twice his normal size and gains a pair of thick and brown eyebrows, with his arm now wearing a red boxing glove. In his final form, he manifests as an angry face on a grey headstone with a cross on top, displaying the term "RIP" (Rest In Peace). Goopy also has eyebrows in his tombstone's inscription.

Personality: In his first phase, Goopy is a rather calm and friendly slime always up for combat.

In his second phase, Goopy acts incredibly narcissistic and overconfident in combat, always commenting on how handsome he is, even as a headstone, as seen in his death screen. However, he seems to hold respect for his opponents, as he makes a cap-tipping gesture using the top his head to Cuphead and Mugman in his opening animation. He also maybe seen to be tricky, as implied in how he uses a pill to enhance his size at the start of Phase 2.

The Root Pack (Group)

Sal Spudder: Sal Spudder is a massive, wrinkly and brown anthropomorphic potato with lanky arms. He seems to have pieces of dirt, skin wrinkles and potato eyes over his body. He has quite some serious eye bags and a pair of furrow brows. Sal Spudder is said to have a rough and tumble attitude.

Ollie Bulb: Ollie Bulb is a large anthropomorphic onion with lanky arms, blushing puffy cheeks, a round purple nose and a pair of small crescent brows. He slightly furrows almost all the time except when he is happy. He has a trio of small leaves on top of his head. His body consists of strips of onion skin, each with a different shade. Ollie Bulb is the more bashful follower of the Root Pack; a well-meaning and bashful tagalong who is a little in over his head.[1] He is shown to be quite emotional, as seen when he cries uncontrollably while fighting Cuphead and Mugman, and in the case of The Cuphead Show, after he has told a sad story. He is a stark contrast to the other two members of the Pack. In Cuphead in Carnival Chaos: A Cuphead Novel, he is the neighborhood grocer.

Chauncey Chantenay: Chauncey Chantenay is a large and orange anthropomorphic carrot with lanky arms and yellow and white eyes. He additionally possesses forehead creases that hide a third eye and a stem with a trio of leaves spreading out. Chauncey Chantenay is mischievous, manipulative and malevolent. He has a more off-kilter aesthetic and personality.[1]. He starts off his phase by coming out of the ground and making some kind of boasting gesture at the players, which implies that he could be a show-off. He is shown to be very zany and outrageous, as his eyes spin wildly while summoning carrots. He also appears to get mad at himself when he loses, as he tugs on his leaves with sorrow.
