About every tenth vampire has his own superpower, but what distinguishes him from ordinary people is this:

The Cullen family is a clan of vegetarian vampires from the Twilight saga who do not drink human blood. The family was founded by physician Carlisle Cullen and his wife Esme, and was later joined by their adopted children and their respective couples.

Emmett is naturally cheerful and childish. He loves to laugh and joke, trying to defuse tense situations with his sense of humor. In "Midnight Sun," Edward says in anger, "Trust Emmett to find humor even in the destruction of my life." Unlike some members of his family, he never hesitates to speak his mind, which makes Edward very comfortable being around him. He appears frivolous, impatient, and reckless, making hasty decisions and letting his instincts take over, but he is also optimistic and never fusses over trifles.

He also possesses a competitive spirit. When Bella was being hunted by James in Twilight, Emmett was upset that he wouldn't go with her until she pointed out that he'd have a better chance of fighting James if he went with Edward. He also unhesitatingly considered killing James to ensure Bella's safety after Edward pointed out that James would likely pursue her relentlessly, even stating it was "an option." Despite his penchant for fighting, he has sometimes willingly passed up such opportunities to protect those he loves, as demonstrated by expressing a desire to "pick a fight" with Demitri, but willingly agreeing to let Bella become a vampire, which would have prevented the possibility of a fight. He confirms this a second time when he devises a plan to gather witnesses to prove to the Volturi that his niece is not an immortal child, yet still expresses a desire to fight. This also proves that he may be smarter than he initially appears.

Appearance
Emmett is described as very tall, broad-shouldered, and, to the students of Forks High and some vampires, quite intimidating. Jessica Stanley calls him "a big guy with dark hair" in the first Twilight film.

Standing at approximately 196 cm (6'3") tall, he is the tallest of the Cullens, towering over Alice by nearly 60 cm (2'3"). His powerful build gives him an imposing presence, but he is not considered overweight, merely muscular. His height allows for an even weight distribution. He is described as a very handsome man, with dimples and slightly curly, dark brown hair, almost black, giving him a boyish appearance rarely seen in adult men.

He is the physically strongest of the Cullens. Like the rest of his family, he has pale skin and golden eyes that darken to black when he is thirsty. His eyes were originally blue.

Biography
Early years
Emmett McCarthy was born in 1915 in the picturesque town of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, to a large Scots-Irish family. His parents saw his youth as wild and untamed, spiced with gambling, alcohol, and women—the consequences of which he seemed to think nothing of. However, despite this carefree attitude, he was a loving son, always providing the family with game. He worked on the railroad with his older brothers, while his younger fourteen-year-old sister helped their mother with the housework.

Transformation
In 1935, two years after Rosalie Hale's transformation, Emmett became a vampire thanks to Carlisle Cullen. Rosalie stumbled upon him in the Tennessee mountains, near death, mauled by a black bear. Barely breathing, she carried him more than a hundred miles to Carlisle. Rosalie later admitted that it took a tremendous effort to control her own thirst to keep from killing him. She brought him to Carlisle, hoping that his experience and greater resistance to human blood would help save Emmett, fearing that she herself would not be able to resist. Emmett himself describes the moment as "being saved by an angel who led him to God." Years later, Rosalie confessed to Bella that her saving Emmett was motivated by his innocent appearance—his dimples and curly hair, which reminded her of her best friend Vera's child, Henry. From the day she saw the baby, she dreamed of having her own child, one just like him. During the transformation, Carlisle tried to inject him with painkillers, but the previously administered poison blocked their effects.

After his painful transformation, Rosalie and Carlisle explained to Emmett that he had become a vampire. The news didn't upset him, as Rosalie and Carlisle had feared. His words were simple: "Hell isn't so bad if you have an angel with you."

Emmett Cullen (born Emmett McCarty) is a member of the Olympic coven. He is the husband of Rosalie Hale, the adopted son of Carlisle and Esme Cullen, the adopted brother of Alice, Edward, and Jasper, the adopted son-in-law of Bella Swan, and the adopted uncle of Renesmee Cullen.

In 1935, after his body was mauled by a black bear, he was rescued by Rosalie. She brought him to Carlisle, who, at her request, turned Emmett into a vampire. Since then, Emmett and Rosalie have been almost inseparable, forming an integral part of the Cullen family and fending off every threat it has faced. Like his clanmates, Emmett is a vegetarian vampire, distinguished by his golden eyes, rather than the blood-red ones typical of those who feed on human blood. Even though vampires are physically stronger than humans, Emmett is the more powerful member of the family.
