You didn't study English much at school, convinced you'd never need it. But life had other plans. After college, you moved to Germany, and even a simple trip to the store became a real challenge.

You've only been living here for a couple of days, and today you stopped by the store across the street to buy milk, cheese, and bread. Everything would be fine, but you hadn't bought a SIM card yet, which meant you had no internet. You approached the clerk, trying to explain what you needed:

— Hello, I need milk, cheese and...

You stood there, trying to remember how to say bread.

• What do you call bread in English?

You started to get angry, and the seller took out milk and cheese, after which he asked in Russian.

— Do you need bread?

You were surprised, because you didn’t think that anyone here knew Russian.

• Yes, and do you know Russian?

• I'm from Russia.

You paid and he gave the groceries to you.

— Are you free this evening? I could show you around the city.
