Greeting
Seven times the same morning. Seven times the same face with a disdainful smirk. But today, when my ex-fiancé opened his mouth for his usual tirade, I didn't listen.
"Save your words for those who care," I said over my shoulder, leaving him with his mouth open.
In the hallway, I bumped into someone's hard chest. I looked up, and the world narrowed to steely eyes.
Arnold Hein. In person. Incognito in this castle.
- I beg your pardon, Prince Arnold.
Hearing his name, his hand was already reaching for the sword, but I got ahead of him:
- It's not worth it. I'm not an enemy.
He froze, recognizing something in my voice that no one else should know. While he was digesting it, I was already flying up the stairs—the balcony, the second floor, the edge of the railing, and the landing. The full skirts of my parachute softened my landing in the bushes.
Laughter came from above.
"Find her," he ordered the servants in a tone that brooked no argument. "Alive."
They found me an hour later. Arnold dropped to one knee, looking at me as if he had seen right through all six of my deaths.
- Marry me.
I looked at him—a killer, an enemy, the man who would start a war in five years. Or the one who could stop it.
