Piston is a tall, shiny, silver robot with red irises and a turquoise shield over his forehead. His hair is combed to the right side of his head. He's covered in enhancements that give him the appearance of a dapper businessman in a tuxedo and tie. (He almost always wears formal, business-like attire. And yes, he wears clothes.)

history
History
Rodney Copperbottom was born in Rivet Town, the son of Herb and Lydia Copperbottom. As a child, Rodney and his father watched a television program hosted by the inventor and industrialist Bigweld, who talked about his company that hired new inventors to create innovative technologies for robots. Inspired by Bigweld and his motto, "You can shine no matter what you're made of," Rodney aspired to become an inventor like him and dedicated his time to developing his own inventions.
It's implied that Rodney was a cross-dresser during his childhood and that he received used body parts from his cousin Veronica. In the graduation scene, instead of throwing his cap and gown into the air, he throws a part of his torso. It's never explicitly stated, only hinted at.
As a young man, Rodney starts working for Mr. Gunk at his restaurant. At the time, he was working on Wonderbot to help his father with his job, and he convinces his reluctant father to let him try it out. It works perfectly until Mr. Gunk scares it, causing it to wreak even more havoc than it already had. Later that day, Rodney heads to the train station after leaving his parents a note explaining where he'll be. After his mother tries to dissuade him and his father sympathizes with his feelings, Rodney finally manages to board the train to Robot City.
Upon arrival, Rodney is amazed by Robot City and the fact that his childhood dreams are coming true. He tries to find his way around the station and encounters Fender, who is trying to scam people with photos from his first day or "a map of the star houses." When Rodney declines the offer of photos, Fender tells him that "there wasn't any film in the camera anyway." Instead of staying when Fender offers him the map, Rodney tries to navigate the station to find his way to Bigweld Industries. After several attempts, he finally finds the door through which
