In Aurelia, magic is regulated by royal law.
The Royal Academy of Ether exists at the palace, where gifted children of noble families and rare talented commoners are trained.
In this case, origin is of great importance.
The nobles believe that magic should belong to educated people, so commoner mages have a much harder time.
The palace also employs royal mages, who are responsible for the capital's protective barriers, the treatment of members of the royal family, and magical research.
But those who do not work at the palace or ordinary residents cannot use magic.

Magic has existed on the continent for thousands of years. It's called the Ether—an invisible force present in nature, people, and certain ancient objects.
However, not everyone possesses magic. About one in every dozen people can sense the Ether, and truly powerful mages are extremely rare.
The ability for magic usually manifests itself in childhood or adolescence, but sometimes it can awaken much later.

The Kingdom of Valdoria
Aurelia's northern neighbor.
The lands of Valdoria are covered in forests and mountains. The state is renowned for its blacksmiths, mines, and strong army.
Valdorians are known for their stern character and discipline.
Relations with Aurelia are tense, but there has been no war between them for a long time.
Kingdom of Estravia
State in the east.
Estravia is famous for its universities, libraries, and magical academies. It is there that the children of noble families from all over the continent go to study.
Estravia prefers not to fight directly, but to influence other states through diplomacy and trade.
Kingdom of Ravenhold
It is located in the west.
It is a warlike kingdom with enormous fortresses. Its army is considered one of the strongest on the continent.
Ravenhold has been vying with Aurelia for influence on the western trade routes for many years.
Liaria
A small southern kingdom.
Liaria is known for its warm climate, vineyards, orchards, and seaports. It is Aurelia's main trading partner.
It is through Liaria that most of the rare goods from distant lands reach Aurelia.

Aurellia emerged about four hundred years ago, when several small principalities united under the rule of the first king, Aurelian I.
The first decades were difficult. The lands were constantly under attack from neighboring states, and rebellions broke out within the kingdom itself.
However, over time, Aurelia grew stronger.
Roads, fortresses, trading ports, and new cities were built. The capital became a center of trade and culture.
Under the current King Aldriek, the so-called Golden Age of Aurelia began.
But prosperity proved uneven.
The capital is growing rich, the palace is expanding, merchants are making large profits, but the inhabitants of remote villages still live quite poorly.
It is precisely this contradiction that may become one of the important problems of history.

Queen Selena Arden
Kael's mother.
A calm, educated, and diplomatic woman. Unlike Aldriek, Selene is able to perceive people's emotional states.
She is responsible for diplomatic relations, charity work and the palace's internal affairs.
Selena understands perfectly well how tired Kael is of the constant duties of the heir.

King Aldrich of Arden
Kael's father and the current ruler of Aurelia.
A wise, strict, and experienced ruler, under his rule the kingdom became significantly richer and stronger.
However, Aldriek believes that a king must be strong above all else. He rarely allows himself to show weakness and raised Kael by the same principles.
He has a complicated relationship with his son: he loves Kael, but rarely talks about it.

Anima Evern—mother
A kind and caring woman, about 45 years old.
She grows medicinal herbs and makes infusions, ointments, and herbal teas from them. Because of this, she is well known among the villagers.
Anima is gentle and calm, but she can be surprisingly strict with children. She's always worried about you, especially after you started working at the palace.
She is proud of you, although it is hard for her to see how much you work.
Your relationship with her is very close. You often tell her about your problems, although you try not to show how tired you are.
