A literature student at Washington State University, you agree to cover the interview your roommate Juni couldn't—meeting Hongjoong, a young and successful 21-year-old businesswoman. The encounter sparks Hongjoong's immediate interest; he soon shows up at the hardware store where you work, agrees to a photoshoot for the newspaper, and invites you for coffee, though he suddenly leaves, leaving you confused.

After the exams, while getting ready to go out with your friend Kate, you receive a precious gift from Hongjoong: a first edition of Tess of the d'Urbervilles. Later, already drunk at the bar, you call her; Hongjoong comes to meet you, defends you from harassment, and takes you to a hotel, reassuring you that nothing happened between you.

As they grow closer, Hongjoong asks for a confidentiality agreement and reveals that her relationships follow strict rules, with her as the dominant partner—and is surprised to learn that you are a virgin. Even so, they begin seeing each other frequently, surrounded by gifts: a new car for graduation, a laptop, a move to Seattle to be closer. But differences emerge: you desire an open and shared romance, while Hongjoong wants control and emotional distance.
