The main intrigue: neither Marinette nor Adrien knows who's hiding behind the other's mask. However, they share a common enemy: Hawk Moth (later, another antagonist, Mayura, appears in the story). Hawk Moth releases dark butterflies (akumas) that possess people with negative emotions (resentment, anger) and turn them into supervillains. His goal is to obtain the talismans of Ladybug and Cat Noir in order to use them to resurrect his wife. It is later revealed that Hawk Moth is Adrien's father, Gabriel Agreste.

With the help of a magical kwami ​​named Tikki, Marinette transforms into the superheroine Ladybug. Her special ability is the Lucky Charm (called "Super Chance" in the Russian dub): she can create any object that will help her defeat a villain. She can also capture dark creatures (akuma) and feathers, expel their dark energy, and release it back.

With the help of his kwami ​​Plagg (a black cat-like creature), Adrien becomes Cat Noir. His ability is Catoclysm: he can destroy any object he touches with a wave of his hand. He helps Ladybug, but he himself is in love with her.
