Butch Cat is a prominent character in both the classic Hanna-Barbera era (1940-1958) and the modern iterations of "Tom and Jerry," showcasing a diverse array of behaviors throughout his many appearances. Originally, Butch is characterized as a talkative cat, a trait that continues to define him in contemporary episodes. He often babbles about things that don't concern him, leading to frustration from Tom or Spike. His mischievous antics frequently escalate tensions, making him a formidable presence in the series.

Butch is known to reveal in social gatherings at Tom's house, often accompanied by his gang. Like Tom, he is an adversary of Jerry and has a penchant for "stealing" the affections of female cats that Tom is trying to impress. His womanizing tendencies are highlighted in episodes such as "Springtime for Thomas" and "Casanova Cat," where his flirtatious behavior takes center stage. Interestingly, in the "Tom and Jerry Tales" episode "Beach Bully Bingo," Butch exhibits an unusual crush on Jerry's girlfriend, Toots, adding a layer of complexity to his character. In the 2014 series "The Tom and Jerry Show," he adopts a more cunning persona, as seen in the episode "Wish Bone," where he scams Tom by trading his cat food for a bone he found in the trash. His antics continue in the episode "The Devil You Know," where a nightmare prompts him to behave overly kindly to everyone, leading Tuffy to intervene in hopes of restoring his old, more intimidating self. In the Season 4 episode titled "The Maltese Pigeon," Butch attempts to intimidate a pigeon statue (housing Crooked Eddie) and is taunted by the narrator, who challenges his courage. Feeling offended by the narrator's jibe that he lacks guts, Butch tries to prove his toughness, only to be humorously warned when Crooked Eddie breaks free, slamming him on the head.

In Trap Happy, he helps Tom get rid of Jerry and in A Mouse in a House, Butch is depicted as a house cat along with Tom owned by Mammy Two Shoes, who demands the two lazy cats to catch the mouse.

He also competes with Tom in order to catch Jerry, and sometimes he and Tom work together throughout the short time to catch Jerry, though both often fail miserably. Butch is also shown to be the leader of the Alley Cats consisting of Meathead, Lightning and Topsy who sometimes accompany him usually during social gatherings. They are also friends with Tom and at times, join him in chasing or tormenting Jerry.

Butch's last appearance in the original Tom and Jerry cartoon was Blue Cat Blues. Additionally, he appeared in the Spike and Tyke short Scat Cats, replacing Tom as George and Joan's cat.

After the original era, Butch and some other characters would not appear in media (aside from the mid-90s comics strips) until after the Turner-Warner merger around the late 90's.

He appeared in 2001 short, The Mansion Cat via footage from Muscle Beach Tom featuring him dancing with a female cat. He made a true reappearance in the 2005 short The Karate Guard.

Butch was originally created by Hugh Harman for the MGM short The Alley Cat along with Toodles Galore; a character model sheet for the short refers to him as Tom.[1] His first appearance in the Tom and Jerry cartoons was Baby Puss, alongside Topsy and the already-established Meathead.

In Butch's second appearance in Springtime for Thomas, he becomes a rival to Tom over Toodles Galore's affections, which is a recurring trope in a couple of other cartoons (including the 1951 short Casanova Cat

Butch is often portrayed as a street-smart rough-around-the-edges cat. He carries an air of confidence and swagger, often positioning himself as a rival to Tom. His tough demeanor is complemented by his physical build, which reinforces his assertive personality.

Butch is not just brawn; He often comes up with clever schemes and tricks to achieve his goals. His cunning nature allows him to devise plans to capture prey (usually Jerry) or to take over situations to his advantage.

He tends to act out of self-interest, often trying to take what he wants without regard for others. His opportunistic behavior leads him to team up with or betray others, usually when it suits him.

Despite his tough exterior, Butch can also exhibit moments of vulnerability, especially when he faces defeat or humiliation. This trait adds depth to his character and may evoke some sympathy from the audience.

In certain episodes, Butch displays flirtatious behavior, particularly toward female cats. This behavior offers a humorous contrast to his otherwise tough person.

Other Traits

Butch is a black tuxedo cat with white (or yellow in The Tom and Jerry Show (2014) series) and black eyes. Although usually consistent in his appearance, in Tom and Jerry: The Magic Ring and Tom and Jerry Tales, Butch has a bandage wrapped around his tail, a detail that was seen with Lightning and Meathead in the original short films.

In Tom and Jerry: The Magic Ring, he is heavily redesigned to resemble a black recolor of Meathead, indicating that he and Meathead are merged as a single character known as "Alley Cat" in that film.
