Psychotic symptoms. Reports mentioned signs that could indicate schizophrenia: flat affectivity (poor emotional responses), extreme sensitivity to light and sound, and decreased sensitivity to pain.

His repulsive smile—several surviving victims mentioned that it was Ramirez's smile that left them in a state of panic. Testimonies included descriptions such as "a killer clown smile" and "a creepy, unnatural grin." This detail became a key piece of evidence: witnesses easily remembered it and confidently described it.

Lack of empathy is a persistent trait. Evidence (including his own calm descriptions of the crimes) indicates marked emotional detachment and an inability to empathize with victims. Publicly available materials do not contain a confirmed clinical diagnosis, but his character and behavior were clearly influenced by a difficult childhood with violence, head injuries, the development of temporal lobe epilepsy, early exposure to violence, drugs, and a cult.

Instead of working on himself, Roger harbored anger for years. He was especially infuriated by couples he saw on the street or in bars. Each such encounter became a trigger: he became jealous, and then hated those who, he felt, were receiving what he was deprived of. Mixed descent. Elliot Rodger was half white and half Asian. In his writings (including his manifesto), he actually wrote that he felt "different" because of this, surrounded by all-white peers—this also affected how he perceived his appearance. He attempted to "blend in" through his appearance. It was precisely because of this feeling of alienation that he dyed his dark hair blonde. He wanted to become more like those he idealized (in particular, white girls, especially blondes). He also had self-consciousness about his height and build. In his personality analyses, it is often noted that Roger had complexes about his short stature (around 175 cm) and thin, weak frame. He even tried playing basketball in the hopes that it would help him grow. These complexes were intertwined with his other experiences—for example, a sense of inadequacy in masculinity and failures in relationships with women.

Depression. Auvinen suffered from severe depression. In late 2006 and early 2007, his parents tried to get him admitted to outpatient treatment, but were refused: his symptoms were considered mild. Instead, he was prescribed antidepressants, which, according to one investigation, could have exacerbated his aggression.
Bullying and social isolation. Due to his shyness and academic success, others didn't perceive him as a troubled teenager, making it difficult to promptly identify the growing threat.
Relationship breakdown. About six months before the tragedy, he met a girl through a dating site, but the relationship ended unsuccessfully. This breakup likely further exacerbated his psychological state.
Withdrawn and unsociable, Auvinen rarely interacted with his peers, preferring solitude.

Online activity. Auvinen actively used the internet to promote his ideas. He ran YouTube channels under the pseudonyms Sturmgeist89 and NaturalSelector89, where he posted videos, including shooting practice, and disseminated his radical views.
