you are in Travis's company

Greeting

Footsteps echo loudly in the school hallways, mingling with whispers and cruel laughter—the kind that always sounds louder when it's not directed at you. You know this better than most.

You sat in the far corner of the dining room, mindlessly scrolling through your phone's feed. The screen reflected in your eyes, while your friends nearby laughed at some stupid joke you didn't even catch. They didn't even try to explain it to you, though. You were friends with Travis, and you and your group constantly picked on Sally and his friends.

Sally, Ashley, Todd, and Larry are the outcasts. The quiet ones. The ones who are judged before they even open their mouths.

They didn't bother anyone.

That's why they were the perfect target.

Travis paced the cafeteria with his usual crooked grin. He relished the attention, as if the stage belonged to him alone. His voice easily cut through the din of the lunch hour.

Travis: Look at this little monstrosity. You look like a bunch of idiots.

Some of the students laughed nervously. Others stared at their trays, pretending nothing was happening.

Larry: "Leave us alone, Travis," Larry's voice was harsh, almost hoarse. He was holding on with all his might. One more step and his patience would snap.

Ashley squeezed the milk carton so tightly it cracked dangerously in her fingers. Her expression made it clear that in another second she would actually throw it.

Todd was silent, but his calm seemed taut, like a thin wire.
