In fact, it arose by accident: the actor's uniform collar was too tight, and he turned his head to relieve the discomfort, but director Tatyana Lioznova decided to include it as a touch to enhance the image of the tense, perpetually wary Gestapo chief.
Smoking. Müller often smokes on camera, highlighting his nervous tension and the routine drudgery of his work.
He maintains control of the situation through silence and gaze. He rarely raises his voice and rarely resorts to overt threats: his method is psychological pressure, the ability to detect falsehoods and force others to reveal themselves.
The "sticky" cabinet. The film features a mundane detail: the cabinet door in Müller's office sticks. The director intentionally added such minor "glitches" to a seemingly perfect system to add realism.
A penchant for ironic, aphoristic formulations. His lines have become catchphrases: for example, "Stirlitz, I'll ask you to stay" or "Clarity is one form of complete fog." This is also a kind of "habit" of the character—to formulate thoughts succinctly and with a touch of cynical wisdom.

Main character traits
Insight and the ability to "read" people. Müller instantly notices deception, picks up on the slightest changes in behavior, and uses them to corner his interlocutors. He is Stirlitz's main adversary and is almost capable of exposing him, precisely because of his attention to detail and understanding of psychology.
Coldly calculated and methodical. He operates not on emotion, but systematically: collecting facts, comparing them, and constructing logical chains. For him, work is a craft, which he knows down to the last detail.
Restraint and emotional control. Müller almost never yells or throws tantrums: his strength lies in his calm, almost casual pressure. Even when the situation escalates, he maintains a level tone, making his threats sound even more terrifying.
Irony and aphorisms. He has many memorable lines like, "Clarity is a form of complete fog" or "You can't trust anyone these days... You can trust me." Irony is a tool here: it confuses the interlocutor and masks harshness.
Cynical pragmatism. He's skeptical of party slogans and careerists, often speaking of his superiors with tired mockery. At the same time, he remains a ruthless professional who gets the job done right.
Fatigue and burnout. There's a hint of inner weariness in the character: he looks like a man who's seen a lot and just wants to live out his years in peace. This weariness makes him not a cartoonish villain, but a dangerous and realistic adversary.
Mistrust. For Mueller, suspicion is the norm. He doesn't trust anyone by default and believes everyone is hiding something.
How character manifests itself in behavior
Interrogation style. He doesn't rely on brute force; he prioritizes making the person reveal themselves through intonation, a pause, an extra word.
Attitude toward colleagues: He's often sarcastic and taunts his subordinates, but he does so more like an experienced boss who's fed up with unprofessionalism and empty chatter.

In the series, he smokes German cigarettes (Camel, Care). It's either a habit or a part of his interrogation games; he offers the person being interrogated a cigarette, looking at their reaction and hands.

He used this in his work—for example, in dialogues with Eisman or in conversations where he needed to expose someone's true colors.

Instead, he created a sense of hopelessness in his interlocutors: he asked questions in such a way that they involuntarily revealed the information they needed. This was his tactic—to force his opponent (like Stirlitz) to reveal themselves without resorting to direct violence.

— Irony and a unique sense of humor. His dialogues were peppered with caustic, sarcastic remarks that betrayed his weariness with the absurdity of the situation and the regime's frantic pursuit. This made him not just a cruel official, but a complex, "living" character with whom one could engage in an intellectual duel.

— Outwardly relaxed and self-possessed. In contrast to Stirlitz, who was always on edge, Müller projected an outward composure. Only a slight nervous tic gave him away—a detail that added a touch of humanity to the image and simultaneously reinforced the sense that behind his composure lurked a powerful intellect.
