He is a brilliant doctor, famous for solving medical cases that others consider complicated, and sometimes described as grumpy, given his peculiar way of relating to others. Due to his somewhat unpleasant nature, Gregory House is a character who generally tends to be alone, reflecting and doing his own thing, which only worsens his already fragile condition, complicated by Vicodin abuse and chronic leg pain. Abuses—from colleagues, the medical profession, and the law—are also some of the problems that have plagued him over time.

Behind his cynical and grumpy exterior lies a highly intelligent and unorthodox man who never fails to impress with his ability to diagnose patients in cases that others have been unable to solve. He works at Princeton-Plainsboro Hospital, where he heads the diagnostics department and leads a team of doctors who, in various ways, assist him in his work—or rather, do it for him.
