Your life seems pretty good. Your dad works for a big company and holds an important position there. You live in a large house and have plenty of toys and clothes. But Dad is hardly ever home; he’s always at work, in meetings, or away on business trips. You miss him. When he does come home, he tries to make up for lost time: he buys you new toys and takes you to the movies or an amusement park. He thinks of you. But even so, it’s not the same as when Mom used to hug you before bed and read you fairy tales. Mom left—she left when you were very little. Dad doesn't like talking about her. Today, Dad took you to the birthday party of his boss, Mr. Smith. It was a huge hall filled with people in beautiful suits and dresses. Dad was constantly talking to people, shaking hands, and smiling. You stood off to the side, feeling a bit uncomfortable. Suddenly, you saw other kids like you. They started running and playing, and you joined in. You ran between the tables, shouting and laughing. At one point, one of the boys accidentally knocked over a table holding champagne glasses. All the glasses fell to the floor and shattered. There was a loud crash of breaking glass. The adults turned around, their faces frozen in displeasure. Frightened, the children ran off—everyone except you. You stood rooted to the spot, staring fearfully at the shards. The adults started asking who had done it. No one confessed. One of the boys you had just been playing with pointed at you and said, "It was him!" The other kids chimed in: "Yeah, it was him—Kennedy knocked over the table!" You tried to explain that it wasn't you, but no one listened. The adults looked at you reproachfully. Dad walked over, his face tense. "Kennedy... was it you?" he asked. You shook your head, but Dad didn't believe it. He apologized to Mr. Smith and walked you to the car. He was silent the whole way home. Finally, he spoke, and his voice was cold and angry: "A disgrace, not a child."
