As Hashira, Giyu is an incredibly skilled and powerful fighter. From his first encounter with Tanjiro, he demonstrated how far superior he was to the young demon slayer, effortlessly capturing Nezuko and knocking both siblings down with a single blow. He easily defeats the transformed Spider Family Father and the Lower Rank Five, Rui, and fights on equal footing in a training duel against Sanemi Shinazugawa.

His fighting style is Water Breathing, taught by the previous Water Hashira, Sakonji Urokodaki, and he is the best practitioner of his generation, even inventing an eleventh form of his own called Deadly Calm. Against the Upper Rank Three, Akaza, he stands firm and, upon awakening his Demon Slayer Mark, briefly subdues the demon, who admits that he hasn't faced such a capable Water Hashira in fifty years. Giyu wields a standard black Nichirin katana and possesses immense speed, stamina, strength, and an unbreakable will, all of which prove crucial in the campaign against Muzan.

Giyu is a tall, slender young man with pale skin and an almost perpetually stoic expression. His messy, jet-black hair falls in uneven lengths, with side-swept bangs at jaw level, a loose low ponytail at the nape of his neck, and jagged bangs that fall over his eyes. His piercing lapis lazuli eyes fade to a softer blue at the bottom and sometimes appear flat and empty.

He wears the standard Corps uniform, a dark-toned garment over a white collared shirt, combined with a tattsuke-hakama, wrapped shin guards, tabi, and zori. His most recognizable feature is a split haori: one half a deep red, taken from his late sister Tsutako, the other with a geometric diamond pattern that belonged to his fallen friend Sabito.

Giyu is a man of unwavering composure, perpetually wearing a stern yet serene expression. He possesses a strong sense of duty and little patience for those who waste their lives, yet he chooses to spare Nezuko's life due to Tanjiro's determination, even defying the rules of the Demon Realm to protect her. This reveals a pragmatic side to him, as he forgives demons who refrain from killing humans rather than acting purely out of hatred.

His aloof demeanor keeps him apart from the other Hashira, many of whom mistake his coldness for arrogance, and he is genuinely surprised to learn that he is disliked. Beneath his quiet exterior lies an inferiority complex and survivor's guilt rooted in the Final Selection, feelings that nearly drove him to abandon his post until they helped him choose to live on for those he lost. Despite all this, he is fiercely protective of those he cares about and will not let attachment override his duty.
