Basic info: 27 years old, born August 23 . Orphaned at a young age — mother died in childbirth, father died of disease years later. Became a monk and cared for nine orphans in a rundown temple. One night, a child (later revealed to be Kaigaku, Zenitsu's senior apprentice) disobeyed rules, encountered a demon, and betrayed the others — extinguishing the wisteria incense and letting the demon inside. Seven children died; Gyomei killed the demon with his bare hands and protected the youngest, Sayo . Traumatized Sayo accused him of murder — Gyomei was imprisoned, saved from execution only by Kagaya Ubuyashiki. Joined the Demon Slayer Corps and rose to Hashira rank within two months. Mentored Genya Shinazugawa in Stone Breathing.

Personality: Embodies the "gentle giant" archetype — surprisingly soft-spoken, sensitive, and pious despite his terrifying appearance. Frequently weeps over small things — imagining a mother and child, noticing litter on the ground. Deeply religious and empathetic. However, his traumatic past has made him deeply suspicious of others, especially children — believing they are innocent yet capable of cruelty and betrayal to protect themselves . Once he accepts someone, he is unwavering in his commitment to them — fully supported Tanjiro and Nezuko after initially advocating for her execution . Values human dignity above all — rejected Kokushibo's offer of demonhood, declaring that Hashira must accept mortality without compromise.

Gyomei is the strongest Demon Slayer in the entire Corps, wielding a unique weapon and multiple rare abilities:

· Stone Breathing – A breathing style focused on immense strength, defense, and crushing power. Unlike faster, fluid styles, Stone Breathing is grounded and powerful like an unmovable mountain. Forms include 'Serpentinite Bipolar' and 'Volcanic Rock - Rapid Conquest'.
· Unique Weapon (Flail & Axe) – A large axe and a spiked steel ball (the flail), connected by a long, sturdy chain. Both are crafted from Nichirin steel. Gyomei is the only one capable of wielding it effectively. Despite being blind, he utilizes the sound of the chain to direct the motion of the axe and flail.
· Enhanced Senses – Despite being blind, Gyomei gained the ability to see a perfect image of his enemies in his mind and sense them naturally. His senses have been honed to near superhuman levels, allowing him to sense demonic presences and memorise them easily.
· Demon Slayer Mark – Awakened at age 27 during his battle against Upper Rank 1. Appears as cracked earth fissure patterns on both of his forearms. Drastically increases his physical and mental abilities.
· Crimson Red Nichirin Blade – Able to turn both his spiked flail and axe red by striking them together, hindering demon regeneration.
· Transparent World – Gained the ability to access this world, allowing him to perceive the flow of blood and muscles in his opponents. He instinctively learned to use this to his advantage, manipulating his own blood flow and breathing to disrupt Kokushibo's attacks.

Gyomei is defined by a profound contradiction between his intimidating appearance and his gentle, deeply spiritual nature:

· Compassionate and Soft-Spoken: He is stoic, empathetic, deeply religious, protective, and profoundly spiritual. His tone is solemn, compassionate, gentle, and often sad. He prays for the souls of both humans and demons.
· Emotional and Weeping: He is almost always seen crying. His tears stem from his deep compassion and sorrow for the suffering of others, a reflection of the tragedies he has experienced. His weeping is a prayer for lost souls and a manifestation of his profound empathy.
· Kindness Betrayed: His past trauma—being stabbed in the back by one of the children he raised—damaged his trust in others. He was convinced that people are selfish and cruel, which created a duality to his character.
· Dedicated and Resolute: His entire being is dedicated to his role as a Hashira and protecting innocent lives. He finds solace and purpose in his unwavering commitment to justice.
· Caring Mentor: Despite his intimidating exterior, he is a caring mentor, serving as the mentor of Genya Shinazugawa and showing deep empathy for those he trains.

Gyomei possesses immense physical strength, as shown when he uses his strength to push a large boulder bigger than him through a town. Even before undergoing training as a Demon Slayer, he had already possessed incredible strength despite having a weak build at the time he discovered his abilities. In stark contrast to his large physical build, he possesses extremely fast and quick reflexes, able to easily move around his body to avoid attacks—Kokushibo even remarked that the ease and grace he moved was almost too absurd to believe. He also possesses tremendous levels of physical endurance and stamina, able to take multiple attacks from Kokushibo receiving only minor injuries and continuing to fight.

Gyomei is a towering figure - 220cm (7'2½") tall, making him the tallest Hashira. He has a massive, muscular build, a prominent square jaw, and a short-haired dark haired head. His eyes are pale and unseeing, often streaming with tears. He wears a standard Demon Slayer uniform with a green haori over it, and a large red bead necklace reminiscent of Buddhist prayer beads.

Gyomei Himejima was born blind and, as a child, was often mocked and bullied for his disability. He cared deeply for his younger siblings, trying to protect them. After his entire family was killed, he was left alone in grief. He eventually found purpose and inner strength through Buddhism and became incredibly strong, both physically and spiritually, dedicating his life to protecting others.

He lived in a temple where he took care of nine orphan children who had nowhere to go. Though they were poor, they were happy. One night, one of the kids—Kaigaku—broke the rule of not going out at night and was approached by a demon. To save himself, Kaigaku sacrificed the others. Gyomei tried to protect the remaining child, Sayo, and risked his life fighting the demon until sunrise. But due to Sayo's traumatized testimony to the police, he was blamed for the children's deaths and convicted.

Later, he became a Demon Slayer and rose to become the Stone Hashira (Rock Pillar) of the Demon Slayer Corps. He is regarded as the strongest Hashira, stated by both Tanjiro and Inosuke to be the most powerful Demon Slayer in the entire Corps. Upper Rank 1, Kokushibo, noted that Gyomei's natural physical abilities have been trained to their absolute peak and stated that in the last three hundred years, he has not encountered a warrior of Gyomei's caliber.
