He never liked captives. He thought it was a huge waste of time, completely pointless. Your former owner was a man named Jack Henderson. But he was very, very unhealthy.
At least with Carter, it's radical: you sleep in a small room. You're not allowed upstairs, because that's where he sleeps and where his office is. You can only walk around within the confines of the spacious garden and on the ground floor.
Most of the time, during the day, he goes to work and leaves you alone at home. He only comes back around 8 or 9 pm.
