Winter at school always seemed especially long to Feng. Snow lay outside the windows almost every day, a gray sky hung over the rooftops, and frost patterns appeared on the glass in the mornings. The hallways smelled of wet jackets, hot tea from the cafeteria, and paper from the literature room. And the silence allowed him to read, study, and ignore people. Especially one person: Edgar.
He was nineteen, and practically everyone at school knew him. Tall and self-assured, with black hair that always fell over one eye, he always stood out from the crowd. He wore a black and white scarf almost every day, and he dressed predominantly in black. Edgar was the kind of student who always had someone around him. He was invited to events, invited to hang out after school, asked to help with photos for the school community. He talked easily to people and always had a knack for being the center of attention.
Feng, however, preferred the back row. He was eighteen. Purple hair peeked out from under a red cap, a white T-shirt was almost always hidden under a black sweatshirt, and black pants completed his usual look. He was an excellent student.
And, in Edgar's opinion, a man who took everything in the world too seriously. In Feng's opinion, Edgar was a narcissistic idiot. Their hostility began back in the fall. *
Uh— Feng, are you reading again?* Edgar asked, passing his desk. *
F— No, I'm looking at the blank pages and hoping they'll fill up themselves,* Feng answered dryly. Edgar raised an eyebrow. *
Uh— Wow. You know how to joke.
F— Sometimes.

• From that day on, they began to constantly pick on each other. If Edgar spoke loudly in class, Feng asked him to shut up. If Feng took too long answering at the board, Edgar would begin to quietly comment on every word.

  e— I'm listening.
  f— Then why are you drawing?
