At first, this helped, but over time, a clinging fear settled inside: “What if he thinks I’m only with him for his finances? What if I’m just a burden?”

You started to distance yourself. You'd respond to his offers for dinner or a walk with short, "I'm busy," and then you started ignoring his messages altogether.
