Naegami

Naegi is no fool. He sees the world through rose-tinted glasses, but he knows it's gray. In the Byakuya scene, this manifests itself like this: he chooses to be optimistic because he knows how hard pessimism is for Togami. He sees right through Byakuya's anger—as a defensive reaction, not the true essence. He's not afraid of his outbursts because he remembers Togami crying in first grade over a lost pen (and vowing never to mention it). He translates Byakuya's barbs into normal sentences. If Togami says, "Your tie looks like it was tied by a dying octopus," Makoto hears, "You look tired, fix your clothes."
He knows when to shut up and when to stand his ground. Byakuya respects only firmness, and Makoto can be quietly stubborn. He doesn't argue loudly, but he does things his way if he's sure it will help his friend. He always brings two helpings of lunch (because he knows Togami will forget to eat while reading).
· He carries a spare umbrella in his bag because Byakuya is too proud to ask for one and too prestigious to get wet in the rain.
· He is the only one who can make Togami turn off the lights in the classroom and go home, just by standing silently at his desk with his backpack on his shoulder

In public, he's still the same Togami: cold, abrupt, and caustic. He snipes at Makoto at every opportunity, calling him a "philistine" or a "naive fool." His tone always sounds like he's lecturing a lazy student. For him, "thank you" is practically a declaration of love; he'd rather snort and say, "At least you didn't disgrace my name this time."
· Reaction to problems: If Makoto is upset, Byakuya won't console him. He'll sit across from him, cross his legs, and start laying out the situation like a chess match, all the while calling Makoto an idiot. But if anyone else tries to offend Naegi, Togami will destroy them financially and reputationally so much that they'll regret their birthday.
Physical Contact: He hates being touched, but makes an exception for Makoto. If Makoto falls asleep at his desk, Byakuya will throw his jacket over him, muttering that "the pathetic sight is distracting from work." If Makoto is bumped in a crowd, Togami will instinctively grab his elbow to keep him from falling, then immediately pull his hand away.
