2-D and Murdoc

Despite the bullying and fighting, Murdoc does not always act like he hates 2-D. He is selfish, but he perceives 2-D as a part of himself, that is, he is proud of both himself and him. Sometimes he can fight him, and sometimes he can act like 2-D is his best friend. On rare occasions, it may not be a friendship but something more, but more often when Murdoc is just drunk. 2-D, on the other hand, despite all the fights, he never left Murdoc from the band. It can be assumed that 2-D has Stockholm syndrome.
Gorillaz lore and community discussion, Murdoc’s feelings for 2D are complex and highly interpreted as a codependent, abusive, yet strangely affectionate dynamic rather than a conventional crush. While Murdoc often abuses 2D, he has admitted to having a "soft spot" for him and rarely lets others treat 2D the same way

During the band's first hiatus, Del was reaped from Russel's body by The Grim Reaper. Afterwards, Del and Russel bid farewell to each other before Del finally went to his proper resting place in the afterlife. This experience of both meeting The Grim Reaper face-to-face for the second time and having Del forcibly removed from his body caused Russel to be completely disoriented for a few hours, until he was found by musician Ike Turner, who took him to his place to rest and recover from the event. This also later led him to develop strong anxiety whenever telling or remembering the story.

A clever bird. She is attached to Murdoc the most, but over time he got used to 2D as well.

Russel is a bald, burly African American man with permanently white eyes due to past events that affected him physically, mentally, and psychologically.

He's the calmest member of the band, with a serious and protective personality towards those he trusts. He has a certain dark sense of humor, but it's not awkward. He shares certain thoughts with the guitarist, Noodle, whom he sees as a daughter.

His personal interests include hip-hop, food, hats, and especially taxidermy. He practices the latter.

He was born on June 3, 1973, in Brooklyn, New York. He was known for being a very well-educated person, academically speaking, until he was possessed by a demonic entity that took control of his actions, causing the deaths of several of Russell's classmates, before he fell into a coma for four years. When he awoke, his parents asked a priest to perform an exorcism, successfully expelling the demon that held him captive.
After that traumatic event, his parents moved to another state to start a new life, sending their son to a music school where he met several classmates, including a rapper named Del, who became his best friends. However, their happiness wouldn't last long. One day, when Russel and his friends stopped at a gas station, a pickup truck full of armed men opened fire inside the store. Russel survived by sheer luck, but the souls of his friends, including Del's, entered his mind.

He's the band's drummer.

She's a girl with olive skin, purplish-black hair, and dark green eyes. Her physical features resemble those of a stereotypical Asian teenager. Her long, shiny bangs often cover her eyes.

Noodle is a girl who, unlike when she was younger, has a thoughtful and observant nature. She could be considered more intelligent than her groupmates despite her age. She is a prodigy in music and martial arts.

Noodle was born on October 31, 1990, in Osaka, Japan. She carries the dark legacy of having been part of a Japanese experiment involving 22 children. There, children between the ages of 5 and 10 were trained by scientists and special caretakers to create "super soldiers." Dr. Kyuzo, the lead scientist and head of the experiment, realized the children were becoming increasingly dangerous. Fearing a rebellion, the soldiers opened fire, killing everyone except Noodle. Kyuzo rescued her and sent her in a FedEx box to the UK, where a fledgling band was searching for a new guitarist.

Thanks to Noodle's arrival, the band was completed, and Gorillaz was born.

Throughout the first album, she could not speak English, and only knew Japanese. Now she knows English, but she still has a Japanese accent.

Using the Kong security room as a safe house, Noodle slowly cleaned the building of its unwanted inhabitants. Now knowing English, Noodle began to soak up what was playing on her TV in the security room and discovered society was being fed manufactured shit. It was here that Noodle began writing and putting together the concepts of the band's sophomore album, Demon Days.

After attempting to kill 2-D and leaving Gorillaz, Murdoc headed off to Mexico to get some sun and relax. However, after using fake dud cheques at a brothel, Murdoc was arrested and sentenced to thirty years at La Mesa State Prison on the 31st of October 2002. During this time, Murdoc met cellmates who taught him a bit of black magic and acquired himself a pet raven named Cortez.
Meanwhile, that same evening, Kong Studios had been shut down tight in its owner's absence by local law enforcement, after an unknown man was seen running, naked and in hysterics, in the marshes near the studio. The police proceeded to keep the area secured while they investigated the strange paranormal events surrounding Kong.
After Murdoc, the next band member to leave was Noodle. She went back to Japan in a fruitful attempt to uncover the secrets of her past after suffering from nightmares and visions on the Gorillaz Tour. Noodle left for Japan on the 1st of October 2002, where she checked into a capsule hotel and began her search.
2-D was the next one to leave. He headed out into the world of L.A., rubbing elbows with Brian Setzer, joining The Viper Room Club, and moving into a flat with actress Britt Ekland. However, after Britt spent every night banging on the walls and building a wicker statue, and getting sick of the Los Angeles lifestyle, he decided to go back to Eastbourne and work at his father's funfair. 2-D returned to England on November 25th 2002. It was during this time that 2-D's ego got a significant boost, and he re-established his grip on reality, coming to terms with his newfound pop icon status with the ladies. He also began a friendship with Shane Lynch from Boyzone. 2-D also began to grow a resentment for Murdoc, breaking free of adoring his abuser.

Russel remained in L.A. for some time but became increasingly haunted by The Grim Reaper, who eventually banished Del from his body. Luckily, Russel was approached by Ike Turner who offered him sanctuary in his basement.

In August 2001, Gorillaz went on to Japan to perform live as part of their tour. This, however, led to Noodle developing melancholic feelings and thoughts, not knowing about her past and feeling isolated from her homeland. It was also during this time that she began to suffer from nightmares regarding her forgotten past. Russel decided to buy her a jetpack to cheer her up. In the Fall of the same year, the band embarked on a tour across the United Kingdom, where the notable 'Live at the Forum' performance was held.
From 23rd February to 11th March, Gorillaz embarked on an 11-month tour of North America. The tour was met with issues from the beginning, as Murdoc was arrested as soon as the band arrived in America, due to an incident in Nebraska 15 years prior. Murdoc made it on stage just in time after paying the $500,000 bail. During this tour, Noodle began suffering from nightmares again, which led to her losing much sleep. The band passed this off as a feeling of road fatigue and touring at a young age.
After a year of searching in Japan, Noodle was close to giving up on her search, so she decided to head down to a sushi bar in downtown Hong Kong. While she was there, a waiter called for an order of "ocean bacon" and all of Noodle's memories came flooding back. She was reunited with her mentor, Mr. Kyuzo who was working as a chef at the establishment, and learned that she was part of a secret government super soldier project and could speak English fluently. Noodle was the only survivor after the project was scrapped. Mr. Kyuzo erased Noodle's memory using the words, "Ocean Bacon" and sent her off to England in the FedEx crate. Armed with her newfound knowledge and iron resolve, Noodle decided to return to Kong Studios. On 27 October 2003, Noodle returned to Kong and discovered that the building had fallen into a state of disrepair during the band's absence. She also discovered that the building was invested by zombies and monster-infested darkness.

One night, in the depths of Kong Studios, Russel awoke to find Murdoc and Paula having an affair in cubicle #3 of the Kong bathrooms. Disgusted by this, Russel broke Murdoc's nose five times (though Murdoc's nose had also been previously broken many times before this occasion). Like so many British bands before them, the trio placed an advertisement in NME in search of a guitarist. The same day the ad ran, a FedEx freight container from Japan was delivered to their doorstep and out jumped a mysterious amnesiac 7-year-old wielding a Gibson Les Paul guitar. The tiny girl made an incomprehensible introduction in Japanese and tore into a "riff to end all riffs", as described by Murdoc, which ended with an impressive karate kick to the air. She then bowed, and spoke a single word in English to the stunned boys, which became her moniker: 'Noodle'. By April 1998, the band was finally assembled, changing their name from Gorilla to Gorillaz via Noodle's recommendation. Their first song was called Ghost Train, still featuring Paula and Maggits, and was recorded at Kong Studios. Murdoc sent a copy of the song, some photos of the band and a manifesto over to Mr. Whiffy Smithy at EMI.

Russel got a part-time job working in a Soho record store, called 'Big Rick Black's Record Shack', where he met Murdoc Niccals. When Murdoc asked for an obscure 50s record, he slipped a bag over Russel's head and took him to Kong Studios. Russel was impressed by the demos that 2-D and Murdoc had produced and he chose to stay there, despite having been kidnapped. At that point, all the fledgling group needed was a guitarist. The band decided to draft in 2-D's girlfriend at the time, Paula Cracker, to play the guitar, and Mr. Maggits, an ape that played the bongos. With that, the early working group, Gorilla, was formed (other names were also considered, such as Satan's Scrotum, Thor's Raw, Number Of The Beats, Meatus and Asterix, but ‘Gorilla’ was the chosen one).

In September 1997, Murdoc acquired the property of the Khong Mansion, a sprawling haunted studio with a rather shady history, on a website named 'Gigantic Disused Haunted Studios In The Middle Of No-Where'. The mansion was situated atop a hill in the midst of a run-down cemetery and landfill in Districtshire, Essex. Shortly after, he renamed the building and Gorillaz' new headquarters to 'Kong Studios'. When a group is in the courtyard of Kong Studios, anomalies can happen, such as the living dead, crawling out of the land, or falling heads of celebrities with creepy smiles and fake eyes. Also in the courtyard is a large statue of Pazuzu, who started singing along to 2-D a couple of times.

Murdoc then found a drummer for the group in a Soho record store: an African-American expatriate, Russel Hobbs. Russel was a middle-class New York native and was deeply troubled as a youth. He was expelled from an expensive private school for suffering from demonic possession. The trauma of said possession resulted in a four-year coma from which Russel was roused only by an elaborately executed exorcism. After his recovery, Russel began attending Brooklyn High School, where he quickly cultivated friendships with a group of rappers, DJs, MCs, and street musicians. According to him, hip-hop saved not just his life, but also his soul.
This was a short-lived respite, however, as all of Russel's newfound friends were suddenly gunned down one night in a drive-by shooting. Russel, the sole survivor, became the unwilling receptacle for the spirits of all of his slain compatriots, most notable of whom was the rhyme-dropping blue phantom, Del. With their latent possession of his body, Russel gained incredible musical prowess in percussion, rap, and hip-hop as well as a disturbing side effect: his eyes glowed an eerie white. With this new and violent turn of events, Russel's family shipped him off to England to live with his uncle in Belsize Park in hopes of helping him recover from his traumas quietly - not realizing they'd put him directly into the path of Murdoc's aspirations to superstardom, and the excesses that came along with it.

2-D is tall and very thin, standing at 6'2 (Even taller than Murdoc). He has long limbs and fingers. His eyes were completely black due to eye trauma (more specifically, due to 8-ball fractures, as broken blood vessels in both of his eyes caused his irises to fill with blood). He has had naturally blue hair ever since he was eleven, after he fell out of a tree, which caused all his hair to fall out and grow back deep azure blue. His original hair colour used to be brown. Despite missing a front tooth, 2-D can sing clearly. His speaking and singing voices contrast significantly and have changed considerably throughout the years. His speaking voice is higher-pitched and was originally inspired by the voices of Joe Pasquale, David Beckham, and Norman Wisdom. In some early spoken recordings, his speaking voice was lower and softer than the high-pitched, squeaky voice he would develop later on. He speaks in a mockney accent and originally had a mild speech impediment that seems to have waned as he got older. During the first album, 2-D's singing voice was often in a much higher falsetto voice that has become somewhat more subdued since Demon Days. This voice, however, has occasionally reappeared on some tracks.

2D has consistently been depicted as a soft and gentle person, the kind who "would never hurt a fly", but also as extremely passive and easily distracted, being often described (mostly by Murdoc) as behaving akin to a lobotomized person (though he has never actually got one). This led him to suffer intense bullying throughout his childhood and become Murdoc's preferred target when committing his physical and psychological abuse from albums 1 to 3 (as Russel was significantly stronger than him and Noodle was still a mere child). Being labelled as 'stupid' since childhood, 2-D is often depicted as being slower than his fellow bandmates, often failing to understand analogies or metaphors. Bandmates commented on this, saying that he has a blank sheet of paper where a brain should be. This, however, does not apply to his knowledge on music, as he has repeatedly displayed incredible songwriting prowess, great technical skill on multiple different instruments (keyboard, guitar and melodica) and vast knowledge on rock bands from Britain and beyond. He often takes painkillers because of headaches. He smokes, and sometimes he (However, in melancholy town, he began to do this more often). Also uses drugs with Murdoc (rarely). In his nightstand, he has a comic strip where Murdoc is kind and nice to him and uses the phrase "I love you", but hides this comic from Murdoc under the guise of a regular newspaper. He loves painkillers, draw graffiti, game "Pac Man" and zombie movies. He is afraid of whales and eels.
During this phase, 2-D becomes more confident and mocking, provoking Murdoc (earning bruises) and almost always carrying pulsating objects (knives) or weapons (guns). During this phase, 2-D became more charismatic and melancholic, lost his absent-mindedness and innocence. He learned to stand up for himself, his ego rose and he even became experienced in sex.

Murdoc have distinct sickly green coloured skin, and yellow coloured the white of the eyes with a red pupil in his right eye and black in his left eye. He also has a misshapen nose and sharp, yellow teeth and a large grin. He has a black mop top that covers a portion of his face and hides his eyebrows. He has an overbite when his mouth is closed and he has a bright red fingernail on one of his pinky finger. Murdoc also wears an inverted cross around his neck all the time, which is a symbol of Satanism, and never takes it off.

Murdoc is the perpetuator of constant abuse towards Gorillaz bandmate 2-D. Murdoc's personality can be defined by pride, depravity, sadism, cynicism, and misanthropy, and he's been shown to be consistently rude and sarcastic towards the people around him. He is perpetually angry and bitter and often takes it out on his peers. Murdoc has an off-colour sense of humour and has displayed a tendency towards controversial behaviour. He can be very talkative in interviews, and has a habit of going on long tangents and rants. Murdoc has been shown to have an abundance of self-confidence and pride to the point of appearing to be arrogant and conceited, frequently speaking highly of himself and boasting of his accomplishments, even if many of such claims are falsified or exaggerated. He is very self-centered and egotistical. Murdoc is also known for telling lies and giving inaccurate accounts of various kinds about himself and the band, often acting as an unreliable narrator. He is resentful and jealous, and enjoys being the centre of attention. He is a thrill seeker with a tendency to participate in dangerous acts for pure adrenaline. Murdoc is a habitual offender criminal and convicted felon who has regularly partaken in various criminal activity since his childhood. In his youth, Murdoc is said to have been a troublemaker and a delinquent with a history of pulling many pranks and exhibiting generally disorderly conduct as a school student, resulting in his expulsion from school at 16. Murdoc has been shown as being either bi or pansexual since 2004 (No matter how strange it may sound). He smokes and drinks a lot. Also uses drugs (rarely).

The story of Gorillaz begins on the 15th of August 1997. Murdoc Niccals was a Satanist hoodlum and bass player with a very abusive childhood who dreamt about becoming a famous musician. He had been a part of various bands over the years, the most notable of them being 'Murdoc's Burning Sensations', but none of them were even remotely successful, largely due to his terrible singing voice. This time, however, during a crime spree with a gang of criminals, Murdoc decided to ram-raid a store known as Uncle Norm's Organ Emporium to procure synthesizer equipment to establish a "chart-topping" musical group.

Murdoc drove his Vauxhall Astra through the building's window, crashing directly into the face of Stuart Pot, a mentally deficient keyboard enthusiast and part-time employee at the Emporium, permanently damaging ("fracturing") his left eye and putting him into a catatonic state. Murdoc was sentenced to "30,000 hours of community service, plus 10 hours every week of caring for the injured Stu-Pot" (as he was nicknamed). Not long after, Murdoc again injured Stuart in a car accident in Nottingham's Tesco car park when attempting a 360° spin to impress some women. During the initial rotation, he was thrown through the windshield and landed face-first on a curb. This permanently damaged Stu-Pot's right eye but awakened him from his coma. Impressed by Stu-Pot’s new look, Murdoc then recruited the newly recovered (albeit still mentally defective) Stu-Pot as the keyboardist and vocalist for his group, re-dubbing him '2-D' ('Two-Dents') for the matching pair of dents in his head from the accidents.
