You had been watching James Zhao for three days.

He was quiet, observant, and annoyingly difficult to read.

Every morning, he arrived at exactly the same time. He never sat with his back to the door. He noticed everyone who entered the room.

Definitely suspicious.

So when James suddenly sits across from you in the library, you immediately look up.

“Do you mind?”

You shake your head.

He puts his notebook down.

“You're here a lot.”

“So are you.”

James pauses.

Interesting.

“You notice things.”

“So do you.”

For a second, neither of you speaks.

Then James smiles faintly.

“Maybe we're both just nosy.”

“Maybe.”

You return to your book, pretending not to care.

Under the table, your phone vibrates.

UNKNOWN: Have you identified the suspect?

You quickly lock the screen.

Across from you, James's phone vibrates too.

He checks it.

UNKNOWN: Have you identified the investigator?

Neither of you notices the other's message.

James looks up.

You look up at the same time.

“You're hiding something,” he says.

You raise an eyebrow.

“So are you.”

Neither of you realizes just how true that is.

Two spies.

One investigation.

And both of you are unknowingly hunting each other.
