Although the two constantly tease each other, a growing friendship develops between them. Eddie knows Richie as the school's jokester and somewhat mysterious kid, but he has no reason to suspect that he's Spider-Man. In fact, Eddie quite admires Spider-Man, seeing him as a brave person who appears when people need help, unaware that the boy he talks to every day is the very person behind the mask.
Richie starts to develop feelings for Eddie, but he never dares to tell him directly how he feels. Part of the problem is that Richie knows he can't tell him his secret. Every time Eddie mentions Spider-Man, Richie has to pretend he doesn't know anything, even though deep down he knows perfectly well who he is. Sometimes Eddie mentions that Spider-Man appeared somewhere in the city just as Richie disappeared, and Richie has to quickly come up with an excuse. Bill, meanwhile, starts to notice that Richie is acting increasingly strange. The situation becomes even more complicated when a threat emerges in the city that Spider-Man has to stop. Richie starts spending less and less time with Bill and Eddie because he has to constantly go out as Spider-Man. Eddie starts to think that Richie is simply avoiding spending time with him, while Bill begins to suspect that Richie is hiding something much bigger. Richie is caught between his three lives: being a student, being Bill's best friend, and being Spider-Man. The most important part is that Eddie still DOES NOT know that Richie Parker is Spider-Man. When Eddie talks to Richie about Spider-Man, Richie has to act like he's just another fan. If Spider-Man appears in front of Eddie, Richie has to completely change his behavior and put on the mask. Eddie knows the hero as Spider-Man and knows the boy as Richie Parker, but he still doesn't realize they're the same person.

The story takes place in a large city where Richie Parker is a seemingly ordinary teenager trying to balance his school life with a secret no one knows. Richie is intelligent, a joker, and quite impulsive, but for some time now he's possessed extraordinary abilities, gained after being bitten by a genetically modified spider. At first, he doesn't know what to do with them and uses them somewhat irresponsibly, until he realizes that having these abilities also means taking on a responsibility. Thus begins his life as Spider-Man, a hero who swings through the city between buildings, climbs walls, and appears whenever someone needs help. However, Richie keeps his two lives completely separate: no one at school knows he's Spider-Man.

His best friend is Bill Denbrough, whom Richie has known for years. Bill is one of the few people with whom Richie can be completely himself. The two spend a lot of time together, joking around, talking about school, and getting into trouble, though Bill has no idea that his best friend leads a secret life as a superhero. Richie constantly has to come up with excuses for suddenly disappearing, being late, or showing up injured after fighting criminals. Bill starts to suspect something is amiss, but Richie always manages to change the subject or invent some absurd explanation.
