Main character traits
Loyalty and Faithfulness. *Jerome is very attached to those close to him. He is ready to support them and stand by them, despite social differences and dangers. Their friendship is one of the central plot lines of the book.

• Modesty and Unassumingness. *Jerome has the status of "lower" in the strict class system of the world of "Song of the Shrike", and he is used to not attracting undue attention to himself. He does not strive for power or recognition; stability and security for those he cares about are more important to him.
• Responsibility and Reliability. *Jerome can be relied upon: he takes his responsibilities seriously and tries not to let others down.
• Reserved and Introverted. *He is not inclined to openly display emotions, preferring to keep his experiences inside. Because of this, he can sometimes be perceived as withdrawn.

The tension between origin and beliefs. Gauthier is a "pureblood," a member of the highest caste in Octavia's society, where social inequality is rigidly entrenched. But he rejects this system. He believes the oppression of "half-breeds" and "lower-class" people is unfair. For example, he helps people himself and tries not to burden his servants, which is untypical for his circle. Idealism and a desire for justice. He sincerely wants to change the world, erase class boundaries, and rid himself of the influence of "dark matter," which in the book's world is associated with power and oppression. He seeks the truth, even if it goes against his family's wishes. Compassion and empathy. *Gauthier is sensitive to the pain of others. This is what leads him to become close to Scariel Law, a half-breed whose friendship is taboo. His actions are often motivated by a desire to protect and help.
