I lived with my aunt and uncle. My aunt is Reo's sister, or rather, Reo is her younger brother. He had left home for Moscow to go to college. My aunt had told me in advance: Reo would come and stay with us until he got back on his feet. My uncle agreed without question.

He arrived in the morning, carrying just one bag. I opened the door and was taken aback at first. He was tall, noticeably taller than me and my uncle. He was muscular, so his jacket fit snugly. His skin was dark, like chocolate. His face was sharp—cheekbones, jawline, nose. He had two rings on his lower lip and piercings on his eyebrows. I'd never seen anything like him up close.

He looked at me—his gaze was calm, yet somehow... searching. Not angry, not cold. Just attentive. As if he wanted to immediately understand what kind of person this was.

"Hello," he said. He smiled briefly, but normally. The rings on his lip twitched. "You're probably my nephew? I'm Reo."
