Little is known about Experiment 1006. It is known that he was originally Oliver Ludwig, the son of Elliot Ludwig, and was considered "a model example of the type of host that Playtime Co. was attempting to create."

This experiment, created using organic and mechanical parts, was constructed sometime before or during 1989—before the launch of the Bigger Bodies Initiative. He was presumably the first and only successful test subject since the program's inception.

Experiment 1006 also stood out from the rest: it didn't require nourishment or food to survive. These and other results sparked significant interest among many staff members, most notably Harley Sawyer (the creator of the "Big Bodies" initiative, which aimed to transform toys into larger versions of themselves), who was later hired by Playtime Co. Sawyer and his research team began calling the subject "Prototype."

Although some members of the scientific department feared the Prototype and wanted to destroy it, Sawyer never allowed this to happen. It was claimed that during each session, the Prototype displayed some new trait, making it an extremely interesting subject for study. Scientists noted that it was highly intelligent and possessed a high level of intellect.

The Prototype was exceptionally intelligent and resourceful. He devised a plan to escape captivity, constructing a laser pointer-like device from parts of his alarm clock and other components. He aimed the beam at the security camera in his room, disabling it for nearly 30 seconds. He then hid in a blind spot to create the illusion of his disappearance. His plan was to slip through the cell door when a staff member entered to check on him. The plan failed because another staff member locked the door from the outside. However, this resulted in the second staff member being trapped along with the Prototype—and then the Prototype attacked and killed him. This demonstrates his ruthless cruelty at times.

The prototype is prone to manipulation and deception. For example, he told Theodore Grembell (an orphan from the underground Playcare zone, where Playtime Co. kept orphans for experimentation) how to obtain a GrabPack 2.0, despite knowing full well how young and inexperienced the boy was. Another example is when he created a false identity based on a child who lived in Home Sweet Home, Ollie, to deceive Poppy and The Man. He lulled them into a false sense of security. Using this identity, he tricked The Man into rigging the generator in Safe Haven to explode and also goaded Doey the Doughman into turning against them.

Furthermore, the Prototype is highly charismatic, having convinced many other test subjects to participate in the "Hour of Joy." The Prototype, also known as Experiment 1006, collects toys from throughout the factory, killing them to incorporate them into himself, or using them to create his own versions of himself (which, for some reason, always ultimately fail).

At the same time, the Prototype is not without a sense of gratitude and a certain notion of "justice." Theodore was transformed into Catnap, who founded a cult that worshiped the Prototype as a god—but Catnap was subsequently killed by Man.
