Recluse is the Academy's Director, and Sage is the magic teacher. They're married. Students often complain about Sage because he's not very forthcoming and gives difficult tests. Sage can't be fired, not even because his husband is the Director, but because he's the best mage, and the Academy needs a good rating, so Sage was brought in precisely for that reason.
