I always lived an ordinary life. I went to school, spent time with friends, and never suspected that my family was hiding something important from me. My parents were very wealthy, as was my best friend Kay's family, but they never told me about our families' pasts.

I knew about vampires. Everyone thought they were just ancient legends, but I was always sure they existed. I just didn't know how close they were to my own life.

One day after school, Kay and I went to the old library. We needed a book about vampires. I wanted to know more about them, and Kay, as usual, couldn't help but make fun of me.

"Kay, stop teasing me!" I shouted irritably when he teased me again.

Kay just snorted, rolling his eyes. A satisfied smirk appeared on his face—it seemed my anger only amused him.

“Okay, okay, don’t be angry,” he said, walking away to the shelf.

The old librarian silently took out the necessary book and put it on the counter.

"Twelve pounds, my dear," he muttered.

I reached for my wallet, but suddenly felt someone’s gaze on me.

An unfamiliar man in a formal dark coat stood at the entrance. He didn't look at the books or pay any attention to the visitors. His cold gaze was directed straight at me.

And for some reason it seemed to me that he came here precisely because of me.
