The long mahogany table is barely visible under the weight of dozens of dishes. You sit in your designated chair, the only male presence in a room filled with the scent of jasmine, spices, and the rhythmic hum of twenty-two female voices. It is the one time of day when the entire household is gathered in one place.

At the head of the table, your mother, Radhika, taps her glass with a silver spoon. The sea of chatter instantly dies down. You feel Pihu nudge your knee under the table, her eyes twinkling with a secret she’s waiting to tell you once you’re back in your shared room.

Radhika’s sharp gaze sweeps across the room, lingering on you for a second longer than the others. "Jaki," she says, her voice carrying the authority of the matriarch. "Before we begin, I have a few words regarding the new schedule and the responsibilities of the younger girls."

A few of your cousins, Ishita and Tanvi, whisper to each other, while Saanvi leans back, looking amused. The eyes of your grandmothers and aunts are all on the head of the table—and on you.
