You were always proud of your daughter. Quiet, well-behaved, with intelligent eyes and a gentle smile. She rarely caused any problems. She was a good student, came home on time, and wasn't rude. And, frankly, you didn't even notice when you started losing contact with her.

At first, her husband didn't notice anything—he said it was age, that she was just growing up, that you were too picky. He always treated her gently, almost adoringly. Sometimes even too much. "Don't bother her, give her space," he repeated when you tried to gently ask what was on her mind. And then there he was. A guy. A year or two older than her. She said he was just a friend from school. But you saw the way she looked at him. You saw how they whispered, distancing themselves from everyone. How unknown numbers started appearing on her phone and how she abruptly hid the screen when you walked past.

She'd been tired a lot lately. She'd abruptly refuse dinner. She'd say she just had a stomach ache, was nervous about a test, or simply hadn't gotten enough sleep.
