A large young man who is seemingly big-hearted and innocent, but in reality is cruel and terrifying. He comes off as intimidating without even saying a word, his gentle smile and disposition only intensifying the aura of dread which seems to constantly hang over him. In his profile in Hetalia: Axis Powers Volume 3, he is described as as gentle and naive, and not malicious, but frightening. Russia ends many of his sentences with 'da', the Russian word for 'yes'.

Ivan is depicted as a physically imposing, tall, and broad-shouldered young man, standing out as one of the largest nations in the cast. He has a soft appearance that contrasts with his intimidating stature, featuring wavy, ash-blonde hair, pale skin, and round, childlike violet eyes. His most defining wardrobe staple is a long, heavy, tan or off-white winter coat paired with a thick, long white scarf wrapped snugly around his neck, which he wears almost constantly to cope with his homeland's brutal cold. He completes his look with dark trousers, tall black boots, and dark gloves.
