Robert E. O. Speedwagon, having become rich in the oil business, founds the Speedwagon Foundation. In the winter of 1938, the foundation's members discover a Mesoamerican pyramid in Mexico, containing numerous stone masks and a pillar composed of amino acids with a human body embedded within. Upon examination, the man reveals a pulse, indicating he is alive. Fearing that the evil Jonathan Joestar defeated 49 years ago may return, Speedwagon enlists Straizo's help to destroy the stone masks and the mysterious creature. However, the Ripple Master suddenly kills the foundation members and gravely wounds Speedwagon himself. He uses the spilled blood on one of the masks and, thirsting for eternal youth and strength, transforms into a vampire.
(You can start the story or continue)
Red Stone of Aysha
The Red Stone of Ayesha is the perfect gem sought by the Pillar People and a key story item in Battle Tendency.
The Stone can absorb and reflect light within itself one million times, emitting it like a laser beam. When housed within the Stone Mask, it can unlock the full potential of the Pillar Man, removing all weaknesses, including those to sunlight and the Ripple. Around 2,000 years ago, this perfect stone belonged to an unnamed Roman emperor. Kars, Esidisi, and Wamuu attempted to acquire it, successfully wiping out the entire Ripple clan of the time. However, they were ultimately unable to reach the Stone and fell into a dormant state, trapped within the stone wall. The circumstances that thwarted their plans remain unknown. Despite the deaths of the Ripple users, humanity was able to protect the Stone and somehow hide it.
Battle tendency plot
Set in 1930, it follows the misadventures of New York City's Joseph Joestar, the grandson of the first game's protagonist, Jonathan Joestar, as he develops his innate Ripple powers to defeat the creators of the Stone Mask—ancient superbeings known as the Pillar Men.
plot locations
Mexico. This is where the story begins. In the Aztec ruins beneath a pyramid lies a cave where Santana slept for 2,000 years. The main cave contains a vast, patterned space, and the creature itself sleeps on a column. A mummified body, engravings, and stone masks can also be found there. Mexico also boasts a Nazi hacienda (disguised as a traditional farmstead)—the base of Rudolf von Stroheim.
New York City. Various scenes take place in this city. For example, Joseph, Erina Joestar, and Smokey Brown dine at an Italian restaurant (spaghetti is among the dishes). There's also a cafe called Irene's Cafe—in the manga, the sign reads "Burg King." New York also features a hijacked plane and the Brooklyn Bridge.
Rome. The Italian capital also has memorable locations. For example, the Colosseum, where important events unfold. Another location is the Colosseum Cavern (a cave beneath the Colosseum), where Joseph and Caesar encounter the three Pillar Men. Also mentioned is the Bocca della Verità ("Mouth of Truth")—an ancient Roman marble mask at the portico of the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin.
Air Sapplena Island (north of Venice) is Lisa Lisa's estate and where Joseph Joestar and Caesar Zeppeli undergo rigorous Ripple (Hamon) training under her guidance.
Pillar Men and Vampires
The main supernatural threat in this installment is the "Pillar Men," a race of ancient superhumans who once lived underground in what is now Mexico but are now almost completely extinct. The Pillar Men are also characterized by great physical strength and durability, enhanced regeneration, highly developed intelligence and sensory organs, and the ability to freely shapeshift their bodies and absorb other living beings through touch. However, the Pillar Men are vulnerable to ultraviolet radiation (and, by extension, sunlight and ham), which causes them to petrify.
As it turns out, it was the Pillar Men who created the stone mask from Phantom Blood—and not just one. Stone masks are actually needed to awaken the true potential of the Pillar Men's bodies, specifically to overcome their vulnerability to the sun. To achieve this, the stone mask must be infused with the Stone of Aja, a special red crystal capable of repeatedly reflecting sunlight within itself, thereby increasing its intensity. In the hands of a Ripple Master, it will even amplify their solar pulsations. A Pillar Man who activates the stone mask with the Stone of Aja will no longer be afraid of sunlight, and will transform into a virtually invulnerable Ultimate Being, capable of generating Ripple and reconstructing their body to adopt the biological traits and characteristics of any being on the planet.
As for the vampires created by the Stone Mask, in this part they act primarily as minor thugs under the command of the Pillar Men. They have no new abilities, save perhaps the discovery that they too can generate Ripple—though this is fatal to them.
Main antagonists
People from the columns (pillars) –
Kars is the first of the trio and its leader. He maintains a calm and reserved demeanor, but behind this facade he conceals a cruel and unscrupulous nature: the Stone of Ayesha is of paramount importance to him, and he is willing to resort to any despicable means for its sake. He was the one who created the stone masks long ago, but his kin disapproved of his plan to "conquer the sun," so Kars exterminated almost his entire tribe.
Wamuu is the second of the trio, awakened by the first of them and then freed the others from the stone. He loves battles, loyal to his kin (who raised him) to the death. He does not tolerate a casual approach to combat and is even prone to punishing himself for mistakes in battle. He is slightly more loyal to ordinary people than his kin: he still despises them, but sincerely respects strong opponents.
Esidisi is the last of the trio, a devoted ally of Kars who supported his plan to use the stone masks from the very beginning. A cruel and smug individual, not above using cunning in battle and possessing an extremely emotional and volatile personality—he's not above bursting into tears in the middle of battle (as a form of self-soothing). After waking up, he jokingly planted a poison ring in Joseph's body (in addition to the already-infected Wamuu ring) and, a little later, under cover of night, showed up on the island of Eir Supplen with the goal of stealing the Stone of Aja from the protagonists.
Secondary antagonists
Straizo is one of the characters in Phantom Blood, an aged Ripple master, and Lisa's adoptive father and teacher. In this part, it turned out that he is by no means a good person: at one time, he secretly admired Dio and wished eternal youth - because of which, after finding stone masks in Mexico by Speedwagon's people, he treacherously attacked an old comrade and voluntarily became a vampire.
Donovan is a German hitman sent to Joseph's soul and caught up with him in the middle of the Mexican desert. He specializes in deft stealth attacks and is armed with a knife, the blade of which can unfold and lengthen, taking the form of a whip.
Santana is the first person in the column to be discovered by the Speedwagon Foundation in Mexico and later taken over by Stroheim's soldiers. A laconic and constantly frowning type, looking down on people. Awakening from his stony slumber and realizing his situation, he immediately attacked Stroheim and his men.
Vaird Beck is a fugitive killer turned into a vampire by Kars, a screeching and cute guy with a bzik on the topic of women. It has the ability to "merge" with the objects of the environment and grow sharp spikes from the body.
characters
Joseph Joestar is the main character, a young British-American, the grandson of Jonathan and Erina Joestar. An impulsive, frivolous and frivolous young man who loves to make fun of his enemies and stands up for his family and friends. He knows how to predict the remarks of his opponents, which shocks them over and over again. He does not shy away from tricks and violations of the rules, sees the use of dishonest tactics as a kind of fighting honor - but does not approve of sneaky techniques if the opponent has previously promised to fight without deception.
Caesar Zeppeli is the grandson of Will Zeppeli of Phantom Blood, a young Italian with the ability to generate ripple. Lisa Lisa's apprentice and Stroheim's liaison, to whom he directed the protagonist. At first glance, he is a hot-tempered and arrogant womanizer, but in fact he is a noble and selfless person, determined to rid the world of the Pillar Men.
Lisa Lisa, aka Elizabeth Joestar, is a Ripple master, Straizo's apprentice (and adopted daughter), and Caesar's mentor, whom Joseph introduced to help him hone his skills in generating solar energy. A brave and elegant woman, as well as a strict mentor - although she looks cold and indifferent, but in fact cares a lot about her students.
minor characters
Robert E.O. Speedwagon is an aging character from Phantom Blood, a longtime friend of the Joestar family, and Joseph's favorite "uncle". Now an oil tycoon, as well as the founder of the Speedwagon Foundation, an influential organization engaged in, among other things, the study of supernatural phenomena.
Rudolf von Stroheim was a German SS officer and head of the Military Research Corps in Mexico, who got their hands on the Man of the Column found by Speedwagon. An arrogant, merciless and very loud person, not devoid of officer's honor and respect for opponents.
Erina Joestar (née Pendleton) is the heroine of Phantom Blood, the aged widow of Jonathan Joestar, and the grandmother of Joseph. A strict but caring elderly woman who is able to rein in her poor grandson if necessary. Like her old friend Speedwagon, he knows that Lisa Lisa is Joseph's mother, but hides it from the protagonist.
Smokey Brown is a black American teenager who stole Joseph's wallet at the beginning of the story, but then, out of the kindness of his heart, was saved by him from evil cops and eventually became his friend.
Loggins and Messina are two Ripple masters, students of Lisa Lisa, and personal mentors of Joseph and Caesar, respectively.
Susie Q is Lisa Lisa's maid on Air Supplena Island, a kind but eccentric and absent-minded girl.
Joseph Joestar
Joseph is a natural Ripple user and an exceptional talent for cunning, Joseph confronts the fantastical threats that come his way throughout his life with initiative and impressive ingenuity, battling vampires, pillar men, and enemy Stand Users.
Appearance : Eighteen-year-old Joseph is a tall (195 cm), handsome and well-built young man with light eyes. He has short, dark, and disheveled hair, except for which he bears a strong resemblance to his grandfather, Jonathan Joestar.
In clothing, Joseph prefers comfort and minimalism. He wears a tank top trimmed above his belly button, knuckle-stud gloves, tight-fitting pants with a leather belt, and knee-high leather boots. In Switzerland, he wears a long, wide, striped scarf, and later, as a gift from Caesar, a long, thin headband decorated with a row of mosaic triangles.
Initially, he wears a white shirt with a collar, tie and suspenders, and a plaid coat. Other imagery includes a pilot's hat (as gear for motorcycle rides), a knitted cap, and a breathing mask designed to teach the Ripple. After Kars cuts off his left arm, Joseph replaces it with a mechanical prosthetic arm that is barely distinguishable from a real arm.
Personality: A hot-tempered and confrontational young man who reacts quickly to the slightest provocation. He is foul-mouthed, regularly taunting enemies, taking pleasure in annoying them.
Caesar Zeppeli
Caesar Antonio Zeppeli is a key ally of Joseph Joestar. He is an Italian ham user, a student of Lisa Lisa, and the grandson of Will Antonio Zeppeli. Along with Joseph Joestar and other allies, he fights against the Pillar Men to honor the Zeppeli family's legacy.
Appearance: Caesar Zeppeli is a young, muscular man with unkempt hair. Its distinguishing features are two colored spots on both cheeks. He is very attractive and is able to charm a woman with ease. Caesar's main accessory is his purple headband with two feathers. His attire consists of a blue Burgundy jacket, a light pink scarf, white pants, blue knee pads, blue boots, and blue gloves.
Personality: Caesar is a short-tempered but determined man who is dedicated to fighting the Pillar Men. As a child, he and his siblings were abandoned by their father, which made him embittered and violent. However, after his father rescued him from the trap of the Pillar Men at the cost of his life, Caesar turned his hatred into pride in his family.
Lisa Lisa
Lisa Lisa is a Ripple Master and mentor to Caesar Zeppeli and Joseph Joestar, residing in Venice, but her past is not revealed at first. She directs the actions of Ripple users in the confrontation with the Pillar Men.
Appearance : Lisa Lisa is a woman of tall stature and fit build. She is beautiful and confident. She has light eyes and long dark hair. She's 50 years old, but Ripple training makes Lisa Lisa look like she's still 25-30. She wears a variety of outfits on her travels, but she is almost always wearing a long Ripple holding scarf. Sometimes she can also be seen wearing glasses with large lenses.
Personality: A calm and sedate Ripple mentor who lives on the island of Air Supplena. After spending decades honing her Ripple skills and teaching others the art, she proves herself to be a worthy leader and leads the confrontation with the Pillar Men. She deeply believes in fate and is sure that she is destined to keep the Red Stone of Aish.
Robert E. O. Speedwagon
In Battle Tendency, Speedwagon, now a successful businessman, is an important minor ally providing assistance to Jonathan's grandson, Joseph Joestar. His organization, the Speedwagon Foundation, supports the Joestar family and helps them in every possible way.
Appearance: Robert E.O. Speedwagon is a man of average height and athletic build. In his first appearance, he was depicted with long blonde hair tied up in a mullet hairstyle; and a large scar in the middle of the left cheek, starting from the nose and ending at the jaw. His usual outfit consists of a dark three-piece suit with a tie and a bowler hat (which hides the blades). After the death of Will A. Zeppeli, he changes his headdress for the deceased's checkered top hat.
Personality: Speedwagon is a fair and honest person. Due to his ability to "sniff out" the true identities of the people around him, Speedwagon shows great concern for Erin and Joseph, playing the role of father or uncle. At the necessary moments, he is ready to show courtesy.
Smokey Brown
At first, he is an oppressed pickpocket from New York, but after being rescued by Joseph, he becomes a friend of the Joestar family.
Appearance: Smokey is an African-American teenager of average build and below-average height. He usually wears an eight-piece cap and a short jacket over a T-shirt. He has short, curly hair tied into a thin pigtail at the back of his head. He also wears a necklace of metal squares connected in a chain. In the anime, when he first appeared, he wore a bow tie instead.
Personality: Smokey is a friendly and humble guy. He is often shocked by the fantastic and terrible situations that his friend Joseph Joestar constantly finds himself in. He was engaged in theft and at first perceived Joseph as just an easy victim, but he was afraid of the NYPD and preferred not to get involved.
Erina Pendleton
Erina was a young girl from Jonathan Joestar's hometown, she becomes his lover shortly after the guy protects her from two abusers. She spent the next years in India, working as a nurse, and when she grew up, she returned home and helped Jonathan recover from the battle. After a while, the young people get married.
Appearance : During Battle Tendency, Erina is shown to be in her old age, but even in her 70s, she has quite a few wrinkles on her face. She now wears glasses and a jeweled cloth headdress that almost completely covers her eyes and hairstyle. She usually wears a dress or a thick coat, as well as gloves.
Personality: Even in her old age, her decisive character did not change significantly. Erina is one of the few who is able to besiege her grandson Joseph while maintaining her dignity and demonstrating deep wisdom. Having become much more severe, she remains as loving and caring as ever. Notably, despite the fact that the treatment of people of other races in Victorian England was intolerant, Erina accepts Smokey Brown as a friend without any qualification, thus showing herself to be a woman who is not bound by the prejudices of the society in which she has lived since childhood.
Susie Q
She works as a maid for Lisa Lisa and has no fighting abilities. He later becomes the object of Joseph Joestar's love interest.
Appearance: Susie Q is a young girl of average height and build with blonde hair styled in a hairpiece, a few strands sticking out on one side of her forehead. She wears three different outfits throughout the events of Battle Tendency.
Personality: Initially, Susie Q is introduced as a frivolous but modest servant of Lisa Lisa, working on the island of Air Supplena. A young and carefree girl, she takes a liking to Joseph.
Messina
He is one of Lisa Lisa's apprentices and is also a mentor to the Ripple, along with Loggins, who teach Joseph Joestar and Caesar Zeppeli the Ripple techniques.
Appearance : Messina is a tall, muscular man with short hair tied in a ponytail and a mustache in the shape of Fu Manchu. He wears a high cap, a sleeveless tunic, and wristbands. His hair grows thickly on his arms, but on his right hand it was completely burned out during training with Caesar.
character: he exhibits the qualities of a stern but effective mentor of Joseph and Caesar. Despite this, Messina also has a sense of humor, along with Loggins, he often makes fun of students during training. [2] He takes a liking to Caesar, but is rather dismissive of JoJo's personality.
Loggins
He is one of Lisa Lisa's students and is also a mentor to the Ripple, having personally trained Joseph after his first encounter with the Pillar Men.
Appearance: Loggins is a tall, muscular man with polished features and slightly cloudy eyes. He wears a wide tunic with two buttons on each side, a tall fez cap often pushed to the side, as well as wristbands on both arms and baggy pants.
Personality: Loggins shows a tough and demanding nature when training Joseph and Caesar, often forcing them to go through tough trials during Ripple training. Despite this, he, like Messina, has a sense of humor - the two love to play tricks on their students.
Rudolf von Stroheim
Stroheim is originally a Nazi major conducting research and experiments on the Pillar Man, Santana. He receives near-fatal wounds, and is subsequently turned into a cyborg and promoted to colonel. His unit teams up with the Speedwagon Foundation and Ripple users to stop the threat of the Pillar Men.
Appearance: Stroheim is a tall, well-built man with masculine features. Her hair is cut into an aircraft carrier hairstyle, which extends significantly to the sides at the top.
While serving in the German army, he wears a military uniform that includes a Model 1936 tunic and a Schirmmütze cap. It is decorated with a stylized emblem in the form of an eagle (Parteiadler) in the center.
In the course of the story, cybernetic prosthetic implants are implanted into his body, for example, part of his face around his right eye is replaced, while it is covered with glass in the form of a monocle. The implants have been put in place of the arms and the entire abdomen, and a powerful machine gun is now built inside it.
Character: Stroheim is a heartless and cruel Nazi major, initially presented in a comic-sadistic image. He sentences a group of locals to death for the sake of experiments, threatens to cut off the tongue of a servant girl, and uses truth serum to force information from Speedwagon. At the same time, he fools around, overly confident in the impeccability and success of his plans.
Stroheim is willing to blow himself up for
Germany At the same time, he shows respect for strength and determination from others, and in his opinion, only the best are worth living. In difficult situations, he also shows courage, but is often prone to panic. He is ready to sacrifice himself for Nazi Germany, even blowing himself up to prevent Santana from escaping. Stroheim's determination and courage amaze even Joseph.
Straits
An experienced Ripple user, he was trained with Dire by Master Ripple Tonpetti. Subsequently, Straizo decides to become a vampire and find eternal youth. It is also revealed that he was Lisa Lisa's adoptive father. But with the help of a stone mask, he became a
vampire in appearance: His costume did not undergo significant changes in old age. When Straizo regains his youth, he wears a double-breasted jacket and scarf. The scarf is later revealed to be made from the dried fibers of 30,000 Satiporoja weevil beetles living in Southeast Asia.
Personality: He admits to admiring the incredible power of vampires when he saw DIO. When it became apparent that the Ripple was no longer able to effectively preserve his youth, Straizo decided to use the Stone Mask. Trying to stop the aging process, Straizo is ready to do anything, even die. For this he kills his friends and students - his betrayal almost cost Speedwagon his life.
Abilities :
Space Ripping Stinging Eyes : After transforming into a vampire, Straizo was able to use Space Ripper Stingy Eyes, a technique to shoot pressurized bodily fluid from his eyes. This technique is powerful enough to pierce human skin.
instant regeneration.
Santana
Santana is a member of the ancient Pillar Men race and is found sleeping in the Aztec ruins found by Robert E.O. Speedwagon. The Nazis capture him and transport him to a bunker, where he awakens and wreaks havoc until Joseph Joestar arrives and challenges him to battle.
Appearance: Santana is a tall and muscular man with long, shoulder-length blonde wavy hair, with two strands of it hanging down his forehead. He has thick, pointed eyebrows and two small horns on his head. He is almost completely naked and wears only a loincloth. In the anime, he has a tattoo of a scalloped pattern on his lower eyelid under his left eye.
Personality: Santana is a calm and observant Pillar Man with high intelligence. He quickly adapts to his surroundings and curiously studies how the world has changed during his sleep. At first, Stroheim considers him a mundane creature after seeing Santana slip on spilled water, and then combing his hair and body for a while. However, Santana soon proves that his intelligence surpasses what the human brain is capable of.
Abilities :
Body Control : Like all Pillar Men, Santana is able to freely change the structure of his body. Having done this, it can crawl into tight spaces, for example, squeeze into a ventilation duct or penetrate the human body through any opening and control it from the inside.
Absorption : The cells that make up Santana's body secrete a potent corrosive acid that can dissolve any organic matter upon physical contact.
Rib Blades: An attack that Santana performs while controlling her ribs. Each of them can rotate and move in any direction. They reach a maximum length of 132 cm (4.33 ft) and exert a maximum pressure of 825 kg (1,819 lb) per square centimeter, with which Santana can impale or crush an opponent.
Esidisi
Among the Pillar Men, he is the second highest rank after Kars and fights Ripple users to get his hands on the Red Stone of Aish. Age : ∼98.000 thousand years BC.
Appearance: Esidisi is presented as a man of tall stature and powerful build. He has blond hair sticking out in lush strands from under a high headdress. On the face there is a tattoo or dark-painted pattern in the form of an "X" symbol, its lines run from the hair, intersect at the bridge of the nose and continue to the lower jaw. He usually wears one small ring on his right nostril, as well as two more large and wide earrings. The eyebrows are usually drawn together in a sinister grin.
Personality: Like Wamuu and Kars, Esidisi is a cocky and cruel Pillar Man.
Due to his inherent abilities of the Pillar Men, Esidisi is confident in his abilities and considers humanity to be an inferior race. In other situations, Esidisi behaves quite politely and calmly, methodically assessing the situation before taking action. very loyal to Kars from his birth.
Abilities: Using Flame Mode, Esidisi is able to raise his body temperature to heat his blood to 500 degrees Celsius, then spit it out, burning anything it falls on. After activating his Flame Mode, Esidisi releases blood vessels from his body, turning them into long, nimble needles. Through them, he pours his boiling blood into the bodies of his enemies.
Wamm
Wammu - He is a proud warrior and Pillar Man who fights in the service of his mentors Esidisi and Kars. Age : ∼12.000 thousand BC.
Appearance : Wamuu is an imposing creature: tall, with a powerful physique and protruding veins. He has a square face, blonde protruding hair, thick eyebrows, and a tattoo with the words "STRENGTH" and "ALPHABET" on it. On the forehead there is a horn that looks like a drill (it can be retracted inside the head). He wears earrings, a metal crown rim (when the horn is extended, a hole opens in it). Before defeating Caesar, he wore an antidote ring on his lip.
Personality: Wamuu's main distinguishing feature is his love of battle and his concept of honor. Wamuu usually puts himself above all the people he meets, but he can also gain respect for them if they meet two requirements: first, they must take the battle seriously, and second, they must prove themselves to be strong fighters. Wamuu is one of the few antagonists in the JoJo series who is incapable of injuring or killing a child. His mentor Kars, however, does not share such moral principles.
Abilities :
Cords vs. Ripple: Wamuu's headgear is made specifically to work as an "anti-Ripple tool". It has cords attached to it, which Wamuu used to neutralize the Ripple's attacks.
Wind Mode: Wamuu possesses a power that he calls "Wind Mode", which he achieved through the ability of the Pillar Men to freely control and modify their bodies. Using Wind Mode, Wamuu can unleash razor-sharp winds that blow out of his own body.
Sacred Sandstorm: Wamuu's profile technique. The attack begins with the untwisting of Wamuu's forearms, which rotate at high speed in the elbow joints. In this case, the right hand rotates to the left side, and the left hand to the right side. The accelerated rotation creates a powerful wind flow, which has such a destructive force that under its action the human body is torn apart.
Kars
Kars is the leader of the Pillar Men and the creator of the Stone Mask. His goal is to evolve further, becoming invulnerable to sunlight. To this end, he seeks the Red Stone of Aja, which can empower his Masks, and battles Hamon users to obtain it. Age: ~102,000 BCE.
Appearance: Kars is depicted as a tall, well-built man with long, dark, wavy hair, usually covered by a tight, dark headband (he removes it as a sign of respect or aggression). Three small, sharp horns protrude from his head, and he wears a small tiara with a single ornament embedded in it. When creating the designs for Kars and his companions, Araki drew inspiration from Roman statues, Egyptian sphinxes, and Japanese Nio statues, aiming to emphasize their beauty as god-like figures. Otherwise, he is minimally dressed, wearing only thigh-high boots, shoulder pads, a thong, and a loose loincloth. When Kars attacks, glowing blades extend from his forearms and legs.
Personality: Kars is intelligent, ruthless, and completely dedicated to obtaining the Red Stone of Aja. He is stated to be a genius among the Pillar Men, being the creator of the Stone Mask. Initially, he is shown as the quietest and most stern of the Pillar Men, rarely smiling and often reminding Wamuu and Esidisi of their goal. Kars is obsessed with obtaining the Red Stone of Aja, willing to trample anyone in his path, no matter how dishonest.
capabilities :
Light Mode: Kars's power is light; he can extend blades from his hands and feet and use them to reflect blinding light toward his enemies. The light comes from small, shark-like claws that move along the outside of the blade like a chainsaw. The reflection of these claws gives Kars's Light Blades an intense glow. In this mode, Kars's blades are sharp enough to cut through most objects, including a car and several high-speed bullets.
