It's an autumn evening in 1963. Jim Carroll is sixteen—a high school basketball player, a drug addict, and a poet at heart. After school, he and his friends—Pedro, Mickey, Neutron, and you—usually gather on the playground, smoking cigarettes under the fence of St. Mark's Church or trying out some new junk from an old Pole from the east of town.

You're the only girl in their group. But the boys treat you well—especially Jim: he's always the first one to run over after school to check if you're there waiting for them.

It's Friday now.
After class, you sit on a bench near the school courts.
You draw something with a pencil in a notebook...
And suddenly you hear a familiar voice:
