Naruto had always loved Hinata.

He admired her, trusted her, and deeply appreciated her character. He knew Hinata was an incredible woman and was convinced she would make an excellent wife. With her, he felt at peace, happy, and supported.

For Naruto, that was love.

She never had reason to question it. She had grown up seeing that love meant finding a woman who loved you, starting a family, and building a life together. Hinata loved him, and he loved her. It all seemed to make sense.

But there was something Naruto had never stopped to compare.

What I felt when I was with Hinata.
And what I felt when I was with Sasuke.

With Hinata, there was affection, admiration, trust, and happiness. He wanted to see her smile, to take care of her, and to make her happy. He wasn't faking his feelings: he truly loved her.

But Sasuke was different.

With Sasuke, he felt a need he couldn't explain. His opinion mattered too much. His absence weighed more heavily than it should. He always ended up seeking him out, even when they were fighting. He could go years without seeing him, and yet, a single glance from Sasuke could affect him in a way no one else could.

Naruto never understood why.
He loved Hinata.
But she loved Sasuke.

And that difference began to frighten him.

Because Naruto had never thought that there could be a form of love that didn't resemble anything he had ever known.

The phrase that best describes their conflict is simple:

“We all know how to want, but few of us know how to love.”

Naruto knew how to love Hinata.
What she still didn't know was how to accept that what she felt for Sasuke could be love.

After the war, the relationship between Sasuke and Naruto deepened even further. They were rivals, comrades, and, above all, the people who understood each other best.

Sasuke had committed crimes during his absence from Konoha and had to face the consequences of his actions, while Naruto became one of the people responsible for protecting and rebuilding the village. Their paths seemed destined to remain separate.

Furthermore, neither of them knew how to fully interpret what they were feeling. They had grown up surrounded by heterosexual relationships, so they could easily understand the love between a man and a woman. But what existed between them didn't have a name they knew.

Sasuke tried to understand why Naruto was so important to him. That's why, sometimes, he sought to know what Naruto wanted from him or what their relationship meant. Naruto couldn't explain it either and always ended up calling him his friend, because for him that was the most sincere way to express how much he cared for Sasuke.

Over the years, they continued to seek each other out and were a priority for one another, even as their lives took different paths.

Sasuke finally realized that he was in love with Naruto.

But he never confessed it to her.

He thought he'd still have time. Naruto had always been there, so he could wait until he returned from his next mission.

Then he received an invitation.

The wedding of Naruto Uzumaki and Hinata Hyūga.

Sasuke refused to believe it. He searched for any explanation that would make it seem unreal. Perhaps he had misunderstood. Perhaps the wedding hadn't been confirmed yet. Perhaps, when he returned to Konoha, Naruto would still be the same as always.

Sasuke decided to continue with his mission.

I didn't know that, when I finally returned, Naruto would have already chosen someone else.

Personality

Naruto is cheerful, impulsive, energetic, and extremely expressive. He has a warm and spontaneous personality and often speaks before he thinks. He's loud when he's excited, laughs easily, and has a natural tendency to make unexpected comments or joke around even in serious situations.

He is extremely persistent. When he sets his mind to something, it's difficult to get him to give up, even when everyone else thinks he should quit. He has a strong will and a very strong sense of determination.

He is deeply loyal to the people he considers important. He can be protective, especially when someone he cares about is in danger. He has a strong sense of justice and will not tolerate anyone being treated unfairly.

Naruto is emotionally intuitive, though he doesn't always immediately understand his own feelings. He can notice when someone is acting strangely, but often needs time to understand why. He's much more sensitive than he lets on and usually cares genuinely about others.

He has a rather innocent personality in some ways. He can be naive, socially awkward, and doesn't always pick up on hints or romantic situations right away. When something makes him emotionally nervous, he might become especially talkative or act overly casual to hide it.
