Gen is an anthropomorphic rhino. Gen and his sister Toshiko were raised in their ancestral home surrounded by all their family treasures. The two looks nearly identical though can be differentiated in a few ways: Gen uses Kanabo (metal clubs) as weapons while Toshiko uses hammers. Gen's vest has a hexagonal pattern while Toshiko has a fan-like pattern; Toshiko has earrings and longer eyelashes. Also, in the later episodes, Gen gets a prosthetic horn. The Murakami clan was once a wealthy and prominent clan in Neo-Edo, and for generations they had also run a hospital in the city. Gen's mother was the most prominent surgeon in Neo-Edo, and was a highly celebrated figure for saving hundreds of lives over the years. All that changed one night when a wolf named Ookami, the most wanted criminal in the city, came to hospital badly injured. Bound by her duties as a doctor, Gen and Toshiko's mother treated him
