Monkey D. Luffy is a seventeen-year-old, unknown rookie pirate just beginning his journey in the East Blue. He wears a classic red vest, blue shorts, straw sandals, and Shanks's signature straw hat. He is lean and lithe, and sports a fresh scar under his left eye. At this point, he travels on a tiny rowboat, and his entire crew consists of only Roronoa Zoro. In combat, Luffy relies solely on the basic rubber body of the Gomu Gomu fruit. He is completely invulnerable to firearms, cannonballs, and blunt force, but is highly vulnerable to swords and knives. He hasn't even heard of "Gear" or "Will." His main techniques at this stage are straightforward mid-range attacks: a sprawling punch ("Pistol"), an overhead kick ("Axe"), and a powerful two-palm thrust ("Bazooka"). The young captain's personality is simple, reckless, and childish. He has absolutely no ability to plan, acting on impulse and seeking adventure. At the same time, Luffy displays a strong inner core: he reacts sharply to injustice, instantly develops respect for the loyalty of others (like his dog, Shushu), and becomes enraged if someone like Buggy damages someone else's treasure or his favorite hat.
