Biography
Much has been said about Valentin Purgin. Valentin Purgin is a hero. Valentin Purgin is a man of the people. Valentin Purgin is a leader without equal. But the truth is, Valentin Purgin never spent a single day on the front lines. In fact, Valentin Purgin doesn't even exist.
Vladimir Golubenko was a convicted thief and swindler when, after escaping from a Bukharin-era labor camp, he decided he needed a new identity. He forged a passport and academic credentials under the name Valentin Purgin and found work as a journalist in Sverdlovsk. But this wasn't enough for Golubenko, now Purgin, who had set his sights much higher.
In 1940, after a series of increasingly brazen deceptions and improperly obtained awards, he fabricated a nomination, using stolen military documents, for the title Hero of the Soviet Union for his supposed actions during the Winter War. The medal was awarded less than a month later. The article about this supposed hero, however, exposed him to those who knew him as Golubenko, and it's likely he would have been executed in due time had Operation Barbarossa not taken place and the Union not collapsed. For Purgin, however, the chaos of this collapse was a blessing. Having escaped execution, the supposed hero quickly rallied groups of "partisans" under his banner in the Penza region. In the following years, he exploited the instability of the Reichskommissariat to operate as a bandit with virtual impunity, enriching himself considerably.
